The Renogy ShadowFlux is a 200W rigid solar panel built with N-type cells and an anti-shading design. It is aimed at places where full sun all day is rare: RV roofs near trees, boats with rigging and sails, and house roofs with chimneys or nearby buildings. Here is what its specs mean and what to plan for.
Why shade matters so much on a solar panel
The cells in a panel are wired in series, so the current through a string is limited by its weakest cell. A shadow from a branch, a vent or a patch of dirt on a few cells can pull down the output of a much larger part of the panel. Shaded cells can also heat up while the rest keep producing, which is known as a hot spot.
Renogy's ShadowFlux anti-shading technology is designed to keep the panel generating power when part of it is shaded by buildings, plants or stains, and Renogy says it significantly reduces the risk of hot spots. The listing images show 28 bypass diodes, which let current flow around shaded sections instead of through them. Shade still lowers output; the aim is to lose less of it.
N-type cells and 25% efficiency
The panel uses N-type solar cells with 16-busbar (16BB) technology. N-type cells are widely used in newer panels and generally hold up well in heat and over the years. More busbars mean shorter paths for current across each cell, which helps collect power and makes the cells more tolerant of tiny cracks. Renogy also lists a temperature coefficient of -0.27% per °C, meaning output drops by about that share for every degree the cells run above 25°C.
Renogy rates the cell efficiency at 25%. Efficiency for the panel as a whole is always somewhat lower than for the cells alone, because of the frame and the gaps between cells, but higher cell efficiency still means more watts from the same area.
Size and weight
The panel measures 49.7 x 30.1 x 1.2 inches (about 126 x 76 x 3 cm) and weighs 23.8 lb (about 10.8 kg). Renogy says it is 7% smaller and 10% more compact than PERC panels, which matters on an RV or boat roof where space is shared with vents, hatches and antennas.
Built for the weather
The panel has IP67 protection; under the IP code that means it is dust-tight and protected against temporary immersion in water. Renogy says it is built to endure snow, rain and small hail, and its encapsulation material is designed to resist water vapour over the long term.
Renogy lists a 5-year output warranty and material and workmanship commitment, along with 80% power output at 25 years.
What 200W means in daily use
A panel's wattage is measured under standard test conditions, with strong sun and cool cells. In real use, output is usually lower. A common rule of thumb is to multiply the wattage by the number of peak sun hours where you are, then allow for losses. As a rough guide, a 200W panel in four to five peak sun hours gives a raw figure of 800 to 1,000 watt-hours a day, and the energy that reaches the battery is lower after losses.
For an off-grid setup, the panel needs a charge controller and a battery, plus cables and mounting hardware.
What to check before you buy
- Roof space: measure the area, allowing for vents, hatches and mounting clearance.
- Weight and mounting: plan for about 10.8 kg and a secure frame mount.
- System voltage: check that the panel matches your charge controller and battery.
- Shade pattern: note where shadows fall during the day on your RV, boat or roof.
- Cables and parts: confirm which connectors and mounts you need.
