The Renogy N-Type 16BB 100W is a 12V solar panel for charging batteries away from the grid. It is aimed at RVs, boats, sheds, farm equipment and other small off-grid systems, where a modest, rigid panel on a roof or frame keeps a 12V battery topped up. Here is what its main specs mean.
What "N-type" and "16BB" mean
Most inexpensive panels use P-type silicon cells. N-type cells use a different silicon doping, and Renogy rates its cells at 25% conversion efficiency. The brand says this gives 20W more output than a conventional p-PERC panel of the same design.
"16BB" refers to busbars, the thin metal lines that collect current from each cell. Using 16 of them, Renogy says, improves conversion and reduces the effect of hot spots and hidden micro-cracks, which can help a panel's service life.
Heat and temperature
Solar panels lose some output as they get hot. The temperature coefficient shows how much: Renogy lists -0.29% per °C, which it says limits power loss in hot weather. A smaller number is generally better, and it matters most for panels on dark roofs in summer, where surface temperatures climb well above the air temperature.
Built for the weather
The panel has IP65 protection, which typically means it is sealed against dust and water jets. It uses low-iron tempered glass, a corrosion-resistant aluminium frame, and Renogy says it is designed to handle snow, rain and heat. Low-iron glass lets more light through than standard glass.
Size, weight and mounting
It measures 34.1 x 22.8 x 1.2 inches (about 87 x 58 x 3 cm) and weighs 13 lb (about 5.9 kg). That is small enough for a van or camper roof, a boat cabin top or a small frame. Check the mounting hole layout and the manual for the right brackets, and leave airflow behind the panel, since it keeps cooler that way.
Warranty
Renogy lists a 10-year warranty on materials and workmanship, plus a 25-year commitment to maintain 80% output. Read the full warranty terms for the conditions.
What 100W means in practice
The 100W figure is the rated output under standard test conditions, with strong, direct sunlight. Real output depends on the angle, shade, season and temperature, so it is usually lower. A single panel suits small loads such as lights, a fan, a phone or laptop, and slowly maintaining a battery. Bigger loads call for more panels, wired in series or in parallel according to your charge controller.
What to check before you buy
- A charge controller: a panel needs one between it and the battery. Check that it is sized for your panel and battery type.
- Space: measure the area for the panel, including wiring and any shade from vents or racks.
- Connectors and cable: confirm what connectors the panel uses and whether you need extension cable or adapters.
- Your daily energy use: estimate how many watt-hours you need, then compare this with what a single panel can provide.
- Installation: follow the manual, local electrical codes and the battery maker's guidance, or use a qualified installer.
