The Renogy E.FLEX 220W is a foldable portable solar panel meant for charging a portable power station away from the grid. It folds down for carrying, stands on its own kickstand and is built for camping, road trips, RV stops and fishing. It is a panel only: the power station and the connector cable are separate.
What 220 watts means in practice
The 220-watt figure is the panel's rated output under ideal conditions, with strong direct sun and the panel pointed squarely at it. Real output is usually lower, because cloud, haze, heat, a poor angle and shade all reduce it. As a rough guide, a 220W panel in good sun can add a few hundred watt-hours to a power station over a day, but the exact figure depends on location, season and how often you reposition it.
PERC monocrystalline cells and the 22 percent figure
Renogy says the panel uses PERC monocrystalline cells with a conversion efficiency of 22 percent. Efficiency describes how much of the sunlight landing on the cells becomes electricity. A higher figure means more power from a given area, which matters for a portable panel because you have to carry and pack it. PERC cells add a reflective layer on the back of the cell, so light that passes through is bounced back for a second chance at being absorbed.
ETFE surface and IP67 weather protection
The front is covered with ETFE film. Renogy describes it as giving long life and protection against environmental stress. ETFE is a tough, light polymer often used in place of glass on portable panels, which helps keep the weight down. The panel is listed as IP67, which the listing says protects against splashes, dirt and even rain. In the IP system, the 6 means dust-tight and the 7 refers to protection against temporary immersion, but the connectors and cable are separate parts, so follow the manual on how to use it in wet weather.
Folding, handles and kickstand
The panel folds for transport and has integrated carry handles. It measures 29.1 x 22.9 x 1.6 inches (about 74 x 58 x 4 cm) and weighs 20.4 lb (about 9.3 kg), so it is a one-person carry rather than a pocket item. The kickstand adjusts the angle, which lets you tilt the panel towards the sun as it moves. For the best output, it generally helps to face the panel towards the sun and adjust the tilt every hour or two.
Matching it to a power station
Renogy designed it for portable power stations, naming the Phoenix 500 and 1000 and "similar power stations from other brands". The connector cable is sold separately, so what matters is that the panel's voltage and current fit the power station's solar input range and that the plug type matches. Both are in the power station's manual.
Who it suits
It suits campers, RV travellers, anglers and anyone who wants to top up a portable power station without a generator or a mains outlet. It is less suited to fixed installations, where rigid roof-mounted panels are the usual choice.
What to check before you buy
- Power station compatibility: confirm its solar input voltage and current limits, and its connector type.
- Cable: the connector cable is sold separately, so check you have the right one.
- Weight and storage: about 20 lb folded, so check you have space in the vehicle and a way to carry it.
- Where you will use it: output depends on open, unshaded ground and the angle of the sun.
- Care: follow the manual for cleaning the surface and storing it.
