The Renogy 48V 3500W Pure Sine Wave Inverter is an all-in-one unit for off-grid and backup power systems. It combines an inverter, a solar charge controller and a battery charger in one case, and it converts 48V DC battery power to 120V AC. It is aimed at homes, cabins, camping set-ups and RVs that run on a battery bank.
Inverter, controller and charger in one
Renogy says the unit integrates an 80A/145V MPPT solar charge controller, a 3500W pure sine wave inverter and a 40A battery charger. Normally these are three separate devices to buy, wire and mount. Putting them together typically means fewer connections and a tidier installation. The listing says it can charge from solar, from the utility grid or from a generator, and invert battery power to AC.
What pure sine wave and surge power mean
Pure sine wave output matches the smooth waveform of mains power, so it generally suits sensitive electronics and motors better than modified sine wave. The unit is rated at 3500W continuous with a 7000W peak surge, which covers the brief extra power that motors and compressors draw at start-up. Check the start-up draw of your own appliances against that figure.
MPPT solar charging
MPPT stands for maximum power point tracking. An MPPT controller adjusts its input to take as much energy as it can from the solar panels, which usually gives more charge than simpler controllers, especially when the panels are cool or the light is weak. Renogy lists the input as up to 145V and the charging current as up to 80A, so panel wiring and array size must fit those limits.
Switching and UPS behaviour
Renogy says that if AC charging or solar charging fails, the inverter charger takes over the supply within 10ms, so connected electronics do not shut down. That quick changeover is what allows the system to work as an uninterruptible power supply (UPS), although you should confirm that your own equipment tolerates it.
Power-saving mode
Idle consumption is listed as 48W, falling to a maximum of 25W when Power Saving Mode is on. This matters in off-grid systems, where an inverter sitting idle all day can use up a meaningful part of the stored energy.
Battery types and protections
The unit has preset modes for 48V AGM/sealed, gel, flooded and lithium batteries, plus a User Mode for custom values. It has an LCD and LEDs, and Renogy lists protections including short circuit, over-voltage and overload. It complies with Part 15 of the FCC Rules and is certified with RoHS. Weight is 23.8 lb (about 10.8 kg), and dimensions are 16.8 x 12.7 x 4.9 inches (about 43 x 32 x 12 cm).
Who it suits
It suits people building or upgrading a 48V off-grid or backup system who want one compact unit that handles solar, grid or generator charging and AC output.
What to check before you buy
- System voltage: this is a 48V unit, so your battery bank must be 48V.
- Battery type: confirm your batteries match one of the preset modes or can be set in User Mode.
- Loads: add up your appliances' running and start-up wattage against 3500W and 7000W.
- Solar array: check panel voltage and current against the 145V and 80A limits.
- Installation: electrical installation should follow local codes and the manual, and many areas require a qualified electrician.
- Space and cooling: leave room for ventilation as the manual describes.
