The MOES 80A smart automatic transfer switch sits between an off-grid solar or wind system and the public grid. It decides which source powers your load. When the battery has enough charge, it runs from the inverter. When the battery drops too low, it switches to grid power, then switches back once the battery recovers.
What a transfer switch does
Solar and wind output varies with the weather. A transfer switch lets a household use its own energy first and fall back on the grid on cloudy or windless days. MOES compares it to a UPS working in the opposite direction: the inverter is the main source and the grid is the backup. A switch like this should be installed by a qualified electrician, and local electrical codes and the manual apply.
Set-points and battery types
The switch detects DC 12, 24 or 48 V and AC 100-120 V at 60 Hz or 220-240 V at 50 Hz automatically. You set a cut-off voltage (when to leave the battery) and a recovery voltage (when to return to it), and the recovery voltage must be higher than the cut-off. MOES says this suits sealed, gel, lead-acid and lithium batteries, provided your battery's voltage is within the supported range.
Switching speed
MOES lists switching times of 10 ms or less from inverter to public power and 16 ms or less from public power to inverter. Quick switching helps keep many devices running without a visible interruption, but sensitive equipment varies, so check what your devices tolerate.
Capacity
The switch is rated for 80A, which MOES gives as 8 kW at 100-120 V or 16 kW at 220-240 V. A large LCD shows the battery's real-time voltage and the status of grid, inverter and battery.
Monitoring and control
MOES lists a battery management function showing the voltages of grid, battery and inverter, plus the load's current, power and energy use. It can be switched manually or through the MOES app over Bluetooth. For remote control beyond Bluetooth range and for scene linkage, a MOES Bluetooth hub is needed, and the package includes one. Surge protection is built in to protect the inverter from surge damage.
Who it suits
It suits off-grid and hybrid cabins, sheds, workshops and homes with a solar or wind inverter and a grid connection, where the owner wants the switch to be automatic.
What to check before you buy
- System voltage and frequency: confirm your battery bank, inverter and grid match the supported ranges.
- Current: make sure your load stays within the 80A limit.
- Wiring and codes: have a qualified electrician fit it and follow local codes.
- Set-points: your battery maker's recommendations should guide the cut-off and recovery voltages.
- App setup: the app and hub need a phone and a home network for remote use.
- Space: it measures about 7.4 x 6.7 x 2.8 inches and weighs 3.5 lb; check the mounting location.
The short version
- An 80A automatic switch between inverter and grid power.
- Auto-detects 12/24/48 V DC and 100-120 V or 220-240 V AC.
- Adjustable cut-off and recovery voltages for several battery types.
- Switching times of 10 ms or less and 16 ms or less, according to MOES.
- LCD, surge protection, app control and a Bluetooth hub in the package.
