The Renogy 200W portable solar panel is a plug-and-play kit that folds into a carry case. It combines two 100W monocrystalline panels with a 20A charge controller, and it is intended for charging 12V batteries away from the grid, in an RV, camper, boat or campsite. This page explains the specs and what to check for your own setup.
What's in the kit
Renogy lists a 200W solar suitcase, a 20A waterproof Voyager charge controller and alligator clips. The description also mentions a 15-inch set of wires with MC4 connectors and a protective soft case. The suitcase has an adjustable aluminium stand, latches and a heavy-duty handle. Renogy says the kit is compatible with multiple kinds of 12V batteries and can be added to an existing system.
Reading the 200W figure
Watts describe the panel's peak output under ideal test conditions. In real use, output is usually lower because of cloud, heat, the angle of the sun and shading. Two 100W panels, wired together, share one controller. As a rough guide, a 200W panel might deliver somewhere around 600-1,000 watt-hours across a good sunny day, but this varies widely with location and season.
Monocrystalline cells and the PWM controller
Renogy says the panels use grade A+ monocrystalline cells, a common type that is typically more efficient per area than polycrystalline. The Voyager controller uses PWM (pulse width modulation) technology, which manages charging to protect the battery. PWM controllers are simple and well suited to smaller 12V systems; MPPT controllers are more complex and can extract more energy in some conditions. Renogy lists multiple protections on the controller. Follow the manual for the correct battery type setting.
Foldable design and size
The suitcase design folds the two panels together. It measures 35.6 x 25.9 x 3.1 inches closed and weighs 34.4 lb, which is a real weight to carry. The kickstand lets you tilt the panels towards the sun. In general, tilting the panel to face the sun and moving it as the day goes on gives noticeably better charging than leaving it flat.
Build and warranty
Renogy describes a rugged canvas protective case, weather-resistant backplanes it says are made to last 25 years, and a 5-year materials and workmanship warranty. The controller is called waterproof, but the usual advice is to keep connectors dry and to read the manual about weather exposure.
Connecting it
The usual order for connecting a charge controller is battery first, then panels, and disconnecting in reverse. The alligator clips make it easy to connect to a battery temporarily. For a longer-term installation, fixed wiring and fusing are typically recommended. Follow the manual and local electrical codes, and if in doubt ask a qualified installer.
Who it suits
It suits RV and camping owners, boat owners, and anyone who wants removable solar that can be set out in the sun and put away. It also suits people who want to try solar before fixing panels to a roof. Roof-mounted panels are generally better for permanent systems.
What to check before you buy
- Battery voltage and type: confirm that your battery is 12V and that its chemistry is supported.
- Battery size: a 200W panel suits small to medium batteries; compare your daily power use.
- Power station input: if you plan to charge a power station, check its input voltage and connector type, as the kit has alligator clips and MC4 leads.
- Weight and storage: 34.4 lb and a 35.6-inch case need space in your vehicle.
- Cable length: check the distance between the panel in the sun and the battery.
