The Renogy KIT-STARTER-100D is a 100-watt, 12-volt solar starter kit for people building their first small off-grid system. It pairs a monocrystalline panel with a 30A PWM charge controller, cables and mounting brackets, aimed at RVs, trailers, boats, sheds and cabins. Here is what is in the box, what the specs mean and what to check first.
What's in the kit
According to Renogy, the kit includes:
- A 100W 12V monocrystalline solar panel
- A 30A PWM Wanderer charge controller
- A 20 ft, 10 AWG solar connector adaptor kit
- An 8 ft, 10 AWG tray cable
- A set of Z-brackets for mounting
The panel measures 43.6 x 22.7 x 3.0 inches (about 111 x 58 x 7.6 cm), and the kit weighs 14.1 lb (about 6.4 kg).
What 100 watts delivers
Renogy says the kit can generate an average of about 500Wh per day, varying with sunlight. That is the sort of figure that depends on location, season, shade and panel angle, so treat it as an estimate. In general terms, 500Wh could run a few lights, charge phones and laptops, and power a small fan, but not heavy loads.
Renogy also states a 22.5% cell efficiency and 100% EL testing of each panel, a method that checks for hidden cracks.
The PWM charge controller
The charge controller sits between the panel and the battery and prevents overcharging. PWM (pulse width modulation) controllers are a simple, established design and typically suit small systems where the panel voltage is matched to the battery. Renogy says this controller has negative grounding, which suits vehicles with the battery negative connected to the chassis. It is compatible with AGM, gel, flooded and lithium batteries, and the system can expand up to 400W with additional panels.
The controller has an RS232 Bluetooth port. With the separate Renogy BT-1 Bluetooth module (not included), you can monitor voltage and current in the Renogy DC Home app, with warnings for over-voltage, under-voltage and over-discharge.
Certifications and weather protection
The panel is listed as certified to UL 61730, CSA C22.2#61730 and IEC 61730/IEC 61215, and rated for 2400Pa wind load and 5400Pa snow load. The junction box is IP65 and the connectors IP67. Renogy lists 10 years on materials and workmanship, 2 years on the controller, and a 25-year power output plan.
Who it suits
It suits newcomers to solar who want matched components for a small 12V system, such as keeping an RV or boat battery topped up, or powering a shed.
What to check before you buy
- Battery: you need a 12V battery; the kit doesn't include one.
- Roof or mounting space: the panel is about 44 x 23 inches.
- Daily energy needs: add up the watt-hours you use.
- Wiring and fusing: follow the manual and local electrical codes.
- Monitoring: the Bluetooth module is a separate purchase.
