The Renogy 100W 12V solar panel is a rigid monocrystalline module designed to charge 12-volt batteries away from the mains. Renogy aims it at RVs, boats, rooftops, farm equipment and other off-grid setups, and it comes with mounting Z brackets. Here is what the specs mean and what a complete system still needs.
What 100 watts and 12 volts mean
The 100W figure is the panel's output under standard test conditions, which are bright and ideal. In real use, output depends on sun angle, cloud, temperature and shading. Renogy says the panel delivers an average of about 500Wh per day, depending on sun availability. That figure is an estimate: a location with long summer days will get more, and a winter day in the north will get far less.
"12 volt" means the panel is intended for charging 12V battery systems, the usual standard in RVs, boats and small off-grid cabins. A panel is only one part of the system. It typically needs a charge controller between the panel and the battery, plus suitable cabling and fuses.
Monocrystalline PERC half-cell design
Monocrystalline cells are cut from a single silicon crystal and are generally more efficient per square foot than polycrystalline cells. Renogy says this panel uses PERC cells with a cell efficiency of 22%. PERC adds a layer at the back of the cell that reflects light back for a second chance to be absorbed.
The panel also uses half-cell construction and 9-busbar technology. Cutting each cell in half reduces current and resistance losses, and thinner ribbons let the cells sit closer together. Renogy says the result is a panel 8-10% lighter and smaller than conventional rigid panels.
Size and weight
It measures about 41.8 x 20.9 x 1.4 inches (roughly 106 x 53 x 3.6 cm) and weighs 14.1 lb (about 6.4 kg). That is light enough for one person to carry, though handling a rigid panel on a roof calls for care and ideally a second pair of hands.
Built for weather
Renogy lists low-iron tempered glass, a corrosion-resistant aluminium frame and polyamide corner supports. The IP65 protection class means the panel is protected against dust and water jets, and Renogy says it is designed to handle snow, rain and heat. The warranty is listed as 10 years on workmanship, with over 80% output after 25 years.
Mounting
There are 20 pre-drilled holes on the back. Renogy says they work with its ground mounts, Z brackets, corner brackets, pole mounts and tilt mounts. Tilt mounts are worth considering where you want to point the panel toward the sun rather than lay it flat.
Who it suits
A single 100W panel suits small loads: topping up a battery on a boat or trailer, running lights and a fan, or keeping farm equipment charged. Larger loads typically need several panels wired together.
What to check before you buy
- Your battery system: confirm the battery voltage and chemistry, and which charge controller you will use.
- Daily energy needs: add up what you want to run and compare it with the estimated daily output for your region and season.
- Roof or mounting space: measure the area, and check that the mounting method suits your surface.
- Shading: even partial shade can cut output sharply.
- Wiring and safety: follow the manual and local electrical codes, or use a qualified installer.
- What's in the box: confirm the brackets and whether cables or a controller are included.
