The Garvee 21-inch cordless snow blower is a battery-powered, single-stage-style machine for clearing driveways, walkways and decks. It removes the fuel, pull cord and extension cord that come with petrol and corded models. Here is what its specs mean and what to check before relying on a battery snow blower.
Brushless motor and 40V power
Garvee says the machine uses a 40V brushless motor, powered by two 20V lithium batteries working together. Brushless motors have no carbon brushes to wear out, and they typically run more efficiently and need less upkeep than brushed motors. The brand rates the clearing width at 21 inches (about 53 cm) and the depth at up to 13 inches (about 33 cm) in a single pass, and says it handles heavy, wet snow.
Rated depth is a best-case figure. Deep, dense or drifted snow is usually cleared in several shallow passes on any machine of this type.
Batteries and runtime
The package listed includes two 5.0Ah batteries. Garvee says they are enough to clear a driveway of six to eight cars on a single charge. Runtime always depends on snow depth, wetness, temperature and how hard the machine is pushed, and lithium batteries generally deliver less in deep cold. If you have a large area, check how long the batteries take to recharge and consider where they will be stored before a storm.
Chute and throwing distance
The chute rotates through 180 degrees, so you can steer snow to one side or ahead without moving the machine. Garvee quotes a throwing distance of up to 25 feet (about 7.6 m) in one place and 23 feet in another, so treat it as roughly 23 to 25 feet. Throw distance varies with snow type and wind, so it is worth setting the chute away from windows, cars and neighbours.
Lights and handling
Two LED headlights light the path ahead, which helps for early-morning or late-evening clearing. The machine weighs 35 lb (about 16 kg) and measures about 49 x 24 x 17 in (125 x 60 x 44 cm), which is light by snow blower standards. That makes it easier to manoeuvre and to keep in a garage or shed, although a lighter machine can have less traction on packed or icy surfaces.
Who it suits
It suits homeowners with a typical driveway, a path and some steps who prefer a quiet, low-maintenance machine and who clear snow regularly but not extreme amounts. It is less suited to very long driveways, plough-packed snow banks or consistently very deep snowfalls, which usually call for a larger machine.
What to check before you buy
- Surface: check the manual for gravel or uneven surfaces, since thrown stones can be a hazard and clearance heights vary.
- Area and snowfall: compare your driveway size and typical snow depth with the 21-inch width and 13-inch depth figures.
- Batteries: confirm the charger, charge time and recommended storage, and keep batteries indoors in a cold snap.
- Chute direction: read the manual on chute position and keeping people, pets and vehicles clear.
- Storage and upkeep: check how it folds or stores, and what the manual says about cleaning after use.
- Safety: follow the manufacturer's operating and safety instructions.
