The Garvee 20-inch cordless snow blower is a battery-powered machine for clearing driveways, paths and steps without petrol, oil or a power cord. It is a lighter-duty option than the brand's 21-inch, 40V model. Here is what its specs mean and where a battery machine fits.

Brushless motor

Garvee describes a 20V brushless motor. Brushless motors have no carbon brushes to wear down, and they typically run more efficiently and need less maintenance than brushed ones. The brand rates the clearing width at 20 inches (about 51 cm) and the depth at up to 10 inches (about 25 cm) in a single pass.

Depth figures are a best case for light to moderate snow. Deeper or wetter snow is usually handled in shallower passes, whatever the machine.

Two batteries

The package includes two 20V lithium batteries rated at 4.0Ah each. Garvee says the pair gives enough runtime to clear a six to eight car driveway on one charge. In practice, runtime depends on snow depth, wetness and temperature, and lithium batteries usually give less in deep cold. For a bigger area, check the charge time and think about whether you can swap batteries mid-job.

Chute and throw

The chute turns through 180 degrees, so you can direct snow to the left, right or ahead without turning the machine around. Garvee quotes a throw of up to 23 feet (about 7 m). Wind and snow type change that, so point the chute away from cars, windows and people.

Lights and handling

Two LED headlights illuminate the area in front of the machine, which helps with early-morning or evening clearing. The listing gives dimensions of about 40.5 x 17.5 x 19.5 in (103 x 44 x 50 cm), and no weight. Garvee describes the construction as robust and the design as user-focused. As with any compact machine, a narrower body is easier to put away and steer around obstacles, though it needs more passes on a wide area.

Who it suits

It suits homeowners with a short to medium driveway, a front path and steps who want a quiet, low-maintenance option and whose snowfalls are typically light to moderate. Very long driveways, heavy plough banks or regularly deep snow tend to need a wider and more powerful machine.

What to check before you buy

  • Snowfall: compare your usual snow depth with the 10-inch depth and 20-inch width.
  • Area: think about how many passes your driveway needs and whether the batteries will cover them.
  • Surface: read the manual on gravel and uneven ground, where stones can be thrown.
  • Batteries and charger: check charge time and storage guidance, and keep batteries out of extreme cold between uses.
  • Weight and storage: the listing doesn't give a weight, so check the final specification and where it will be kept.
  • Operation: follow the manual on safe use, chute direction and keeping others clear.

The short version

  • A cordless 20-inch snow blower with a brushless motor.
  • Rated for up to 10 inches of depth per pass.
  • Two 20V 4.0Ah batteries; the brand says this clears a six to eight car driveway on a charge.
  • 180° rotating chute throwing up to 23 feet.
  • Dual LED headlights for early or late clearing.
