The ECOVACS GOAT A2000 LiDAR PRO is a robot lawn mower that finds its way around the yard without a perimeter wire or an RTK antenna. It also has a trimmer built in for the edges, usually the job left for a string trimmer after a robot mower has finished. ECOVACS lists it for lawns of up to half an acre.
How wire-free navigation works here
Many robot mowers follow a boundary wire pegged or buried around the lawn. Others rely on satellite positioning with an RTK base antenna, which can lose accuracy under trees or next to buildings. This model uses neither. Its HoloScope 360° dual-LiDAR system scans the surroundings with laser light, builds a map of the yard and places the mower to within about 2 cm, according to ECOVACS, including under trees, near fences and in shaded areas.
For obstacles on the lawn, ECOVACS lists AIVI 3D obstacle avoidance designed to recognise more than 200 types of obstacles. As with any robot mower, it's still sensible to clear toys, hoses and fallen branches before a run, and to keep children and pets away while it mows.
Cutting, trimming and thick grass
The mower runs on a 32V platform with two blade discs. ECOVACS describes it as designed for dense, fast-growing lawns such as Bermuda, Zoysia, Fescue and St. Augustine, and for uneven ground. Cutting height adjusts from 1.2 to 3.5 inches (about 3 to 9 cm) in the app.
The TruEdge trimmer is the unusual part. It cuts along driveways, sidewalks, flower beds and irregular borders, so there should be less hand trimming after mowing. Two rolls of trimming line come in the box, each covering roughly 3 km (about 1.9 miles) of edging, according to the listing.
Slopes, bumps and rain
ECOVACS lists slopes of up to 50%, which is 27°, and barrier crossing of up to 1.57 inches (4 cm), such as a lip between two lawn areas. A 50% slope rises half a metre for every metre travelled, steeper than most residential lawns. The body has IPX6 water resistance, meaning protection against strong jets of water, so it can be rinsed clean with a hose.
Charging and speed
The 3.0Ah battery recharges in about 50 minutes at 113.4W, and the mower moves at 2.3 feet per second (about 0.7 m/s). Short charging breaks matter for robot mowers, because larger lawns are usually mowed in several sessions with trips back to the charging station in between.
Setting it up in the app
The ECOVACS app is where the lawn takes shape. You can create several mowing zones, mark no-go areas such as flower beds or a play area, adjust cutting height and speed, define the paths the mower takes between zones, and plan mowing schedules. That suits yards with separate front and back lawns or awkward layouts.
Who it suits
It suits owners of medium to large lawns, up to half an acre, who want scheduled mowing without laying a boundary wire and would rather not trim the edges by hand afterwards. Yards with trees, fences or shaded corners are the situation its LiDAR navigation is designed for.
What to check before you buy
- Lawn size and shape: confirm your lawn is within the half-acre range and think about how the zones would connect.
- Slopes: measure your steepest slope; ECOVACS lists up to 50% (27°).
- Edges: check which paths and bed borders the trimmer can follow, and plan for replacement line.
- Charging station: find a level spot with power near the lawn.
- Use: follow the manual for setup and safe operation.
