The DEWENWILS HWLT03A is a low-voltage transformer for outdoor lighting. It steps 120V household power down to 12V or 14V AC for landscape lights, and adds Wi-Fi so you can schedule and control the lights from a phone. It has three independently controlled outputs, called zones, within a total capacity of 120W.
What a landscape transformer does
Most path, spot and deck lights in a garden run on low voltage. The transformer sits between a household outlet and the lighting cable and converts the voltage. DEWENWILS says this one takes 120V AC to 12V or 14V AC. Pressing the "Zone" button selects the output voltage. A slightly higher tap such as 14V is typically used to offset voltage loss over long cable runs.
Three zones
The three outputs are controlled separately, so you could place pathway lights, yard lights and walkway lights on different zones and run each on its own schedule. The 120W figure is the transformer's total capacity, so the combined load of the lights you connect should stay within it. Add up the wattage of every fixture before wiring.
Schedules and timers
The app offers five timer modes: Schedule, Circulate, Random, Countdown and Astronomical. Settings can be made in one-minute steps, with individual schedules per zone that repeat weekly. An astronomical mode generally follows sunrise and sunset for your location, so lights track the seasons without manual changes. Setup is done by pressing the "+" button to pair the device in the Dewenwils app.
App and voice control
You can use the Dewenwils app or the Smart Life app, and the transformer also works with Alexa and Google Assistant. DEWENWILS says no hub is required, but it connects on 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi only. That means the signal must reach where the transformer is mounted.
Protection and build
The brand lists over-current and overload protection that cuts power when the current threshold is exceeded. Settings are stored on a cloud server, so DEWENWILS says they are kept through power or internet outages. The housing is all metal and described as waterproof, intended for indoor spots such as garages and outdoor spots such as patios and walkways. The listing also notes it is FCC listed. The product measures 5.6 x 3.5 x 10.0 inches (about 14 x 9 x 25 cm).
What to check before you buy
- Total wattage of your lights compared with the 120W limit.
- Whether your fixtures are 12V/14V AC. This is not a DC supply.
- Wi-Fi: it must be a 2.4 GHz network with signal at the mounting location.
- A suitable outdoor-rated outlet and a mounting spot with good cable access.
- Local electrical codes and the installation manual. If you're unsure about wiring or outdoor outlets, ask a qualified electrician.
The short version
- 120W Wi-Fi transformer converting 120V AC to 12V/14V AC.
- Three zones, each with its own schedule.
- Five timer modes, including astronomical, plus app and voice control on 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi.
- All-metal housing with overload protection, FCC listed.
