The DEWENWILS DA-60-12W-1 is a small 60W transformer for low-voltage outdoor lighting. It converts 120V AC household power to 12V AC and includes a dusk-to-dawn sensor and a selectable countdown timer. It is the smallest kind of power pack that can run a handful of LED path lights, spotlights or a small water feature.
What a low-voltage transformer does
Low-voltage landscape lights run on 12V rather than mains voltage. The transformer sits between the outlet and the lights, and DEWENWILS describes the lower voltage as a safer and more practical level for landscape lighting. A cable then runs from the transformer to the lights. Compatible loads, per the brand, include low-voltage halogen and LED spotlights, pathway lights, garden lights and water features.
Sizing it correctly
At 60W, this unit is intended for small systems. DEWENWILS advises that the total power of the lights should not exceed 80% of the power pack's capacity. On a 60W unit that works out to about 48W. LED fixtures commonly use only a few watts each, so that can mean several lights; older halogen bulbs use far more, so fewer. Add up the wattage printed on each fixture before buying.
Dusk-to-dawn sensor and timer
The built-in sensor turns the lights on at dusk. A switch then selects a 4, 6 or 8 hour countdown, after which the transformer turns the lights off. With the sensor, that means lights come on at sunset and go off a set number of hours later, which suits people who only need lighting in the evening. A sensor needs to see natural light, so avoid mounting it where it sits beside a porch lamp or in deep shade.
Overheat protection
DEWENWILS lists an automatic circuit breaker with overheat protection that cuts the power if the operating temperature exceeds 115°. The listing doesn't say whether that figure is in degrees Fahrenheit or Celsius, so check the manual. Protection of this type is meant to stop an overloaded or hot unit from continuing to run.
Size and mounting
The unit is compact, about 2.6 x 3.5 x 4.7 inches, with a 3.3 ft (about 1 m) power cable and a built-in hanging hole for wall mounting. It has a molded weatherproof body that DEWENWILS says resists rain, snow, dust and abrasion. Its small size means it can be tucked out of sight. Even so, the short cable means the outlet must be close to the mounting spot, and the transformer is normally installed above ground, as the manual describes.
Who it suits
It suits small gardens, a front walk with a few LED lights, or a simple spotlight setup. For larger systems or several separate areas, a higher-wattage transformer is generally needed.
What to check before you buy
- Total load: keep lights to 80% or less of 60W, per the brand.
- Voltage: confirm your lights are designed for 12V AC.
- Outlet distance: the power cable is about 3.3 ft long.
- Timer choice: the options are 4, 6 or 8 hours after dusk.
- Cable: low-voltage wire is separate; plan gauge and length.
- Local rules: follow local electrical codes and the manual.
