The DEWENWILS AL300-12-S is a 300W low-voltage transformer for outdoor lighting. It converts 120V household power to 12V or 14V AC for LED landscape fixtures and adds a built-in timer and dusk-to-dawn control. It has two zones and a stainless steel housing meant for outdoor mounting.

Why landscape lights use a transformer

Path lights, spotlights, deck lights and pool lights are commonly designed to run on low voltage. A transformer reduces the 120V from your outlet to a lower level, and DEWENWILS says this model's multi-tap output offers 12V or 14V AC. A higher tap is typically chosen when cable runs are long, to make up for voltage drop along the wire. The brand says it supports 12V/14V AC LED lighting up to 300W in total.

Five lighting modes

DEWENWILS lists five modes, selected by button:

  • Manual on/off
  • Dusk-to-Dawn, which switches on at dusk and off at dawn
  • Dusk-to-Countdown, with 2, 3, 4, 6 or 8 hours
  • Dusk-to-Timer off
  • Timer on/off

A dusk-based mode relies on a light sensor, so the unit's location should avoid direct artificial light, such as a porch lamp, that could confuse it.

Build and weather protection

The housing is stainless steel, and the cover opens downward. DEWENWILS says this protects better against rain, snow and dust than a side-opening cover, since water has less chance to run into the opening. The unit measures about 13.0 x 5.0 x 7.0 inches (33 x 13 x 18 cm).

Protection and installation

A built-in automatic circuit breaker protects against overcurrent and short circuits. Installation is described as quick: the unit has hanging holes, and you connect the positive and negative wires and hang it with two screws. Accessories are included. DEWENWILS also names pool lights and garage lights among the uses, and calls it a 4-channel design in its listing, though it is titled as two zones.

Who it suits

A transformer like this is aimed at someone with a modest to mid-sized LED lighting layout: a row of path lights, a few spotlights on trees or walls, and perhaps deck or pool lighting. With a 300W ceiling, it leaves room for a layout to grow, since LED fixtures typically draw only a few watts each. Someone running very long cable runs or a large number of fixtures would need to add up the loads and think about splitting them across zones.

Using the two zones

Having two zones generally means the load can be divided between two cable runs, rather than hanging everything on one long wire. That tends to keep voltage more even along each run. Check the manual for how the output terminals are labelled, and for how the zones relate to the 300W total.

What to check before you buy

  • Add up the wattage of all fixtures and stay within the 300W limit.
  • Check that your lights are made for 12V/14V AC, and what the fixture maker recommends for voltage.
  • Cable length and gauge, since longer runs lose more voltage.
  • Mounting position: near a suitable outdoor outlet and sheltered from direct artificial light for the dusk sensor.
  • Pool and water installations have extra rules. Follow local electrical codes and the manual, and consult a qualified electrician where needed.

The short version

  • 300W low-voltage transformer, 120V AC in, 12V/14V AC out.
  • Two zones and five lighting modes, including dusk-to-dawn and countdowns.
  • Stainless steel body with a downward-opening cover.
  • Built-in circuit breaker; mounts with two screws.
