The DEWENWILS HSLT03A is a 150W low-voltage transformer for outdoor lighting. It takes 120V AC household power and delivers 12V or 15V AC to a run of landscape lights, with a built-in photocell and timer so the lights switch on and off by themselves. It is the power box behind a path, spotlight or in-ground lighting system.
What a landscape transformer does
Landscape lights such as path lights and spotlights are usually designed for low voltage. The transformer sits between the outlet and the lights and steps the voltage down, which DEWENWILS describes as a safer voltage for outdoor use. The lights connect to its output terminals by low-voltage cable. The brand lists a 6 ft SJTW 18AWG cord on the input side and says it is ETL listed.
Output: 12V or 15V
The transformer offers 12V and 15V AC outputs. Longer cable runs lose some voltage along the way, so a higher tap can help lights at the far end of a run stay bright. In general, the total wattage of the lights should stay comfortably under the transformer's capacity; a 150W unit suits a modest set of LED fixtures, since LEDs draw far less than old halogen bulbs. Check the manual for how to calculate your load.
Modes: Always On, Auto, Countdown, Off
Two buttons (▲ and ▼) cycle through four modes, so there is no complicated programming:
- Always On: the lights run until you change the mode.
- Auto: the built-in dusk-to-dawn sensor turns the output on at sunset and off at sunrise.
- Countdown: the lights come on at dusk and switch off after a set time, from 1 to 9 hours.
- Off.
The countdown is handy if you want lights during the evening but not all night. A photocell works best when it is not shaded or lit by a nearby lamp, so placement matters.
Memory and protection
DEWENWILS says the transformer keeps its last mode setting after a power cut, so you do not need to reset it. It also lists built-in short-circuit protection, which cuts the output after a fault to protect the connected lights. These features are about convenience and resilience rather than extra brightness.
Housing and mounting
The housing is stainless steel, which DEWENWILS says is waterproof and corrosion-resistant. It measures 4.0 x 4.2 x 7.2 inches and weighs 7.7 lb. Hanging holes allow wall mounting. Transformers are usually mounted above ground and near a suitable outdoor outlet, so check the manual for height and placement.
Who it suits
It suits homeowners setting up a small-to-medium LED landscape lighting system who want automatic dusk-to-dawn operation without a separate timer. It also works as a replacement for an older transformer that has failed.
What to check before you buy
- Total load: add up the wattage of all the lights and leave headroom under 150W.
- Light voltage: confirm your lights are designed for 12V or 15V AC.
- Outlet: you need a suitable outdoor outlet within reach of the 6 ft cord.
- Cable run: longer runs lose voltage, so plan the cable gauge and layout.
- Sensor position: keep the photocell away from lights that could trick it.
- Local rules: follow local electrical codes and the manual for installation.
