The DEWENWILS HOSL05E is a 300W low-voltage transformer for landscape lighting with three separate output zones. It steps household 120V AC down to 12V or 14V AC, and adds a photocell and a timer so the lights run themselves. The three zones let you control different areas, such as the front yard, backyard and garden paths, without running a separate transformer for each.
Stepping the voltage down
Most landscape lights, including spotlights, path lights and garden lights, are designed for low voltage. DEWENWILS says the 300W transformer reduces 120V to 12V/14V AC, which it describes as minimizing the risk of electric shock. The brand also lists water pumps among compatible loads. The transformer has a 6 ft power cord on the input side and a metal casing.
Three independent zones
Each zone has its own output, and a "Zone" button turns each on or off or sets its timer. This is useful when areas have different needs: a front-yard path might stay on all evening while the backyard lights go off earlier. It also helps with layout, since several shorter cable runs generally lose less voltage than one long one. Check the manual for the per-zone wattage limits and how the 300W total is shared.
Photocell and countdown timer
A detachable photocell sensor turns the lights on at dusk and off at dawn. Its cable is 6 ft (1.8 m) long, so it can be placed away from the transformer, either indoors or outdoors, wherever it sees natural light without being affected by other lamps. A built-in countdown timer runs from 1 to 12 hours, so lights can switch off automatically after a chosen time. A memory function restores your settings after a power outage.
Housing and mounting
The case is metal, and DEWENWILS says it withstands rain, snow, dust and sunlight. It measures about 6.3 x 3.5 x 11.0 inches and weighs 12.4 lb, which reflects the larger transformer inside. A built-in hanging hole lets you fix it to a wall. Transformers are normally installed above ground near a suitable outlet, so follow the manual for mounting height and distance from the ground.
Who it suits
It suits larger yards or properties with several separate lighting areas, or anyone planning to add more lights over time and wanting spare capacity. For a few path lights, a smaller transformer is generally enough.
What to check before you buy
- Total wattage: add up your lights and leave headroom below 300W, as the manual advises.
- Zone loads: check how the wattage is divided across the three outputs.
- Voltage: confirm your lights work on 12V or 14V AC.
- Cable: plan the wire gauge and run lengths for each zone.
- Outlet and location: you need an outdoor-suitable outlet within reach of the 6 ft cord.
- Local rules: follow local electrical codes and the manual.
