The ZAFRO D026W-50Pt3M is a large compressor dehumidifier for damp basements, humid living areas and seasonal moisture. ZAFRO designs it for homes of up to 7,500 square feet, and it combines Wi-Fi control, six modes and a choice of tank or continuous drainage. Here is what its main figures mean in practice.

What "150 pints a day" means

Dehumidifier capacity is the amount of water a unit can pull from the air in 24 hours, and it depends heavily on the test conditions. ZAFRO's 150-pint figure is a maximum measured at 95°F (35°C) and 90% relative humidity, which is very hot, very humid air. Warm, wet air gives up its moisture easily, so capacity figures quoted under those conditions are much higher than what a unit removes in a cool basement.

The standard industry test uses cooler, drier air and produces noticeably lower capacity figures. So treat 150 pints as the top of the range, and expect less on an ordinary day. The same goes for the 7,500 sq ft coverage figure: how far one unit reaches depends on the layout, how open the space is and how much moisture comes in.

ZAFRO also lists an airflow of 350 CFM (cubic feet per minute), which is how much air the fan moves through the unit.

Six modes and automatic humidity control

The six modes cover different rooms and situations:

  • Auto: holds the humidity you set.
  • Sleep: quieter running for bedrooms.
  • Dry: runs down to 30% relative humidity, then stops.
  • Living Room: stops at 60%.
  • Basement: stops at 40%.
  • Continuous: keeps running down to 10%.

In Auto mode, the unit stops when the room falls about 5% below your setting and restarts when it rises about 5% above it, which avoids constant cycling. There are three fan speeds and a 24-hour timer.

Lights on the top, the water tank and the humidity indicator change colour with the room's humidity: yellow below 40%, green between 40% and 60%, and red above 60%. That gives a quick read of conditions from across the room.

Drainage: tank or hose

Water collects in a 2.11-gallon (8-litre) tank, with an alert when it is full. For long running times, a drain hose of 4.92 feet (1.5 m) is included for continuous drainage. Continuous drainage of this kind relies on gravity, so the hose needs to run downhill to a floor drain or sink.

Controls, noise and built-in protections

Settings can be changed from a phone over Wi-Fi or on the unit, where a large LED display shows the humidity and operating status. ZAFRO says it runs as low as 40 dB in sleep mode, based on its own lab testing, and suggests it for bedrooms and offices. In other modes and at higher fan speeds it will be louder.

It has automatic defrost, which matters in cooler basements, where frost can build up on the coils of compressor dehumidifiers. There is also a reminder to clean the washable filter, a child lock, and an automatic stop if the unit is tilted beyond 45 degrees. The dehumidifier is Energy Star certified.

Size and who it suits

It measures about 11.1 x 15.8 x 24.8 inches (28 x 40 x 63 cm), weighs 40.5 lb (18.4 kg) and stands on casters. A drain hose, user manual and quick guide come in the box.

It suits homeowners dealing with damp basements, large open-plan spaces or humid summers, especially where a floor drain allows continuous drainage.

What to check before you buy

  • Space and conditions: consider your basement's temperature and size rather than relying on the maximum figures alone.
  • Drainage: check there is a floor drain or sink within reach of the 4.92 ft hose, lower than the outlet.
  • Placement: leave room around the unit for airflow, and a level floor for the casters.
  • Noise: 40 dB applies to sleep mode; expect more at higher fan speeds.
  • Upkeep: plan to clean the washable filter and empty the tank if you don't use the hose.

The short version

  • A compressor dehumidifier for homes of up to 7,500 sq ft, rated at up to 150 pints a day at 95°F and 90% RH.
  • Six modes, three fan speeds, a 24-hour timer and Wi-Fi app control.
  • A 2.11-gallon tank or continuous drainage through the included 4.92 ft hose.
  • Colour humidity lights, auto defrost, child lock and a tilt shut-off.
  • Energy Star certified; as low as 40 dB in sleep mode.
