The ZAFRO 10,000 BTU portable air conditioner is a free-standing cooling unit that rolls from room to room. It vents hot air outside through a hose fitted into a window, so it suits homes, dorm rooms and rented spaces where a built-in or window-mounted system isn't possible.

What 10,000 BTU and 450 sq ft mean

BTU measures cooling capacity. ZAFRO rates this unit for rooms up to 450 square feet (about 42 square metres). Room size is only a starting point, because sunny rooms, high ceilings, kitchens and poorly insulated spaces typically need more capacity than the area alone suggests. ZAFRO states the unit can lower the indoor temperature to 61°F (about 16°C), though the real result depends on the room and the weather.

Four modes

The unit offers Cool, Dehumidifier, Fan and Sleep modes. Cool is the main air conditioning mode. Dehumidifier mode removes moisture without aiming for the same cooling effect, which suits damp, mild days. Fan simply moves air. Sleep mode, on most air conditioners, quietly raises the target temperature over the night, and the brand pairs it with a compressor it describes as 2024 generation and a noise level of 45dB or below.

The efficiency figure

ZAFRO lists a SEER of 6.7 and says it is higher than other portable units it compares against. SEER is a seasonal efficiency measure: the higher it is, the less electricity the unit uses per unit of cooling in general. Portable units are measured with different test methods from window or split systems, so compare like with like.

Setting it up

The unit has wheels. The setup, as ZAFRO describes it, is to roll it into a room with a hung (single or double-hung) or sliding window, attach the included hose and window adapter, and plug it in. A single-hose portable unit must exhaust through that window, so the window kit needs a reasonably tight fit to keep hot air out.

Controls are an LED digital display and a compact remote, with a 24-hour timer.

Size and weight

It measures about 12.2 x 12.4 x 27.6 inches (31 x 31 x 70 cm) and weighs around 46 lb (about 21 kg). It is narrow, but the weight is worth thinking about if the room is upstairs.

Filter and upkeep

The air filter is double-layered, removable and washable. ZAFRO suggests cleaning it every two weeks of use. Like most portable units, expect to handle condensate water from time to time, so check the manual for how this one drains.

Who it suits

It suits bedrooms, small living rooms, home offices and dorms with a suitable window, and people who want a unit they can move and pack away seasonally.

What to check before you buy

  • Room size and heat load: compare the 450 sq ft figure with your room's sun, ceiling height and insulation.
  • Window type: check that the window kit fits your window opening.
  • Electrical supply: confirm the outlet and circuit suit the unit's power needs and follow local electrical codes and the manual.
  • Noise: the 45dB or lower figure is the brand's, so consider where it will sit relative to a bed or desk.
  • Weight and storage: think about moving a 46 lb unit and where it goes in winter.
