The Waykar PD160B is a portable dehumidifier meant for damp basements, laundry rooms, bedrooms and similar spaces. It removes moisture from the air, collects it in a tank or sends it down a hose, and then switches itself off and on to hold the humidity level you set. Waykar rates it for areas up to 2,000 square feet.
Capacity and what the numbers mean
Waykar says the unit removes up to 34 pints of moisture a day, measured at 95°F and 95% relative humidity, which is a demanding test condition. The same product description calls it a 40-pint model. In general, dehumidifier capacity figures depend on the temperature and humidity at which they are measured, and everyday results in a cooler room are typically lower than the headline figure.
The humidity range is adjustable from 30% to 80%. Many people aim for roughly 40–50% indoors, but follow your own comfort and the manual.
Automatic control
Once you set a target, the unit runs on its own. When the room reaches the target it stops, and it restarts when humidity rises again. Other automatic features include:
- Automatic shut-off when the tank is full, with a restart after you empty it.
- Automatic restart after a power outage.
- A 24-hour timer for preset operation.
- A 3-minute compressor start delay, a protective feature common on compressor appliances.
- Automatic defrosting, with an operating range of 41°F to 95°F (5–35°C).
Drainage: tank or hose
The water tank holds 0.66 gallons (2.5 L). When it fills, a "Full Tank" indicator lights and the unit pauses until you empty it. For rooms where you don't want to empty the tank often, Waykar includes a 6.56-foot drain hose that connects to the drain outlet for continuous drainage. A hose normally relies on gravity, so the outlet needs to be above a drain or sink.
Moving it around
It has 360° rotating wheels and lift-up handles. The unit measures roughly 9 by 12.2 by 20.9 inches and weighs 28.7 lb on the listing, and 33 lb in the specifications table. Waykar also describes a quiet fan with adjustable speeds (fast and slow). A washable, reusable filter helps with upkeep.
Power
It runs on 110–120V at 60Hz, with a rated power of 350W at 93.2°F and 80% relative humidity. That suits a standard North American outlet.
What to check before you buy
- The size of the space and how damp it is, compared to the test conditions behind the capacity figure.
- Whether a drain is below the unit for the hose.
- Room temperature: the stated range is 41°F to 95°F.
- Noise, if it will run in a bedroom.
- A clear space around the unit for airflow.
- Filter cleaning and the manual's guidance.
- What is in the box: the dehumidifier, drain hose and user manual.
