The Waykar PD1201B is a large, wheeled dehumidifier built for big or damp spaces such as basements, garages, workshops and job sites. Waykar rates it at 296 pints (3.17 gallons) of water removal per day and says it covers areas up to 9,000 square feet. It is a commercial-style unit, much larger than the typical household model.

What 296 pints a day means

Dehumidifier capacity is usually quoted as the amount of water removed in 24 hours under test conditions, typically warm and humid air. Real results depend on the temperature and humidity of your space, so a cool basement will normally collect less than the headline number. A large figure suits big, open or very damp areas, while a small room with mild dampness may be better served by a smaller machine. Waykar lists uses including warehouses, basements, garages, cellars, workshops, libraries, laboratories and small factories.

Humidity control

The touch panel lets you set a target humidity, and Waykar gives the range as 10 to 98% RH. The unit senses the room's humidity and shuts off when it reaches your setting, then restarts when humidity rises again. This cycling avoids drying the air more than you want. A power outage auto-restart function brings it back on when power returns, which is handy for unattended spaces.

Draining the water

You can empty the water bucket by hand, or connect the supplied 6.56 ft (2 m) drain hose for continuous drainage. In continuous mode the water runs away by gravity, so the hose needs a path downhill to a floor drain, sink or outdoors. If the drain is higher than the unit, check the manual, since this setup may not work.

Moving and storing it

At 17.4 x 23.4 x 34.3 inches (about 44 x 59 x 87 cm) and 112 lb (about 51 kg), it is a heavy machine. Four universal wheels and two handles help move it around a floor, and Waykar says the back housing opens like a door so you can keep the drain hose and accessories inside. Stairs are a different matter, so plan for help if you must carry it.

Warranty

Waykar describes a 30-day refund window, a one-year guarantee that extends to a second year, and five years of coverage on the compressor, the part of the refrigeration system. It says it will reply to questions within 24 hours.

Who it suits

It suits owners of large basements, garages, workshops and storage rooms, and tradespeople who dry out spaces on site. For a single small room, a smaller unit may be more practical.

What to check before you buy

  • Space: measure the area and think about how damp it really is.
  • Power: check the electrical requirements in the manual and that your outlet and circuit suit them.
  • Drainage: confirm the route for the hose, or plan to empty the bucket.
  • Weight and path: make sure you can move it where it is needed.
  • Noise: large compressors are typically louder than household models, so consider where it will run.
  • Upkeep: check how often the air filter needs cleaning and how to winterise it.
  • Operating range: most compressor dehumidifiers work less well in cold rooms, so check the manual's temperature limits.
