The Waykar JD025CE-80 is a portable dehumidifier rated to remove up to 80 pints of moisture a day. It is aimed at damp basements, large rooms and other spaces where humidity runs high. Here is what its specs mean and what to check for your own room.
What "80 pints" actually means
Capacity figures describe how much water a dehumidifier can pull from the air in 24 hours. Waykar specifies the 80-pint figure at 95°F and 90% relative humidity, which is a very warm, very humid test condition. In general, figures measured under easier conditions are lower, so figures from different brands are only comparable if the test conditions match. In a cool basement the real daily output is typically lower than the headline figure.
Room size and humidity range
Waykar says the unit suits spaces up to 5,000 sq ft (about 465 m²), and the humidity setpoint can be adjusted from 30% to 80%. It lists homes, basements, offices, bathrooms, bedrooms, kitchens, laundry rooms, cellars and crawlspaces as places to use it. Coverage claims assume an open space, so a closed-off room with lots of moisture sources will typically need more capacity than the floor area suggests.
Controls and timer
The touch control panel shows the humidity reading. You pick a target level, and the machine senses the room and runs to hold it. A 24-hour timer lets you schedule operation, and Waykar says this reduces energy use.
ENERGY STAR certification
The unit is ENERGY STAR certified, which means it meets the programme's efficiency requirements for dehumidifiers. In general, certified models remove more water per unit of electricity than non-certified ones. Check the programme's current listings for the exact model if that matters to you.
Drainage options
There are two ways to drain it. You can remove the 4.3 L (1.14 gallon) tank and empty it by hand, or use the included 3.3 ft drain hose for continuous drainage, for example to a floor drain. Waykar advises tightening the switch on the water pipe when you drain into the tank, to avoid leaks. A hose run needs a downhill path or a drain at a suitable level.
Noise, fan and moving it
Waykar describes a quiet design with an oscillating fan, which it says helps dry a room faster. It is compact at 9.8 x 13.4 x 21.9 inches (25 x 34 x 56 cm), weighs 31 lb (about 14 kg) and has casters for moving between rooms. Noise levels depend on the setting, so check the manual's figures for your own bedroom use.
Filter
The filter is detachable and washable, which keeps upkeep simple. Follow the manual on how often to clean it.
Who it suits
It suits homeowners dealing with a damp basement, laundry area or large living space, who want a plug-in unit that can run unattended with a drain hose.
What to check before you buy
- Space and conditions: compare room size, temperature and humidity with the 80-pint figure's test conditions.
- Drainage: decide whether you will empty the tank or run the hose.
- Placement: leave clearance around the unit for airflow, as the manual specifies.
- Noise: check the sound figures if it will run in a bedroom.
- Upkeep: plan to wash the filter and empty the tank regularly.
- Operating temperature: check the manual for the temperature range, since dehumidifiers perform differently in cold spaces.
