The Waykar DP903B is a large, wheeled commercial dehumidifier built for spaces that a household unit can't keep up with: big basements, workshops, warehouses and rooms drying out after water damage. Waykar rates it at up to 216 pints of moisture removal a day and says it covers spaces up to 8,500 square feet. Here is what those numbers mean and what to think about before bringing a machine this size into a space.

What "216 pints a day" actually means

Dehumidifier capacity is the amount of water the machine can pull from the air in 24 hours. Waykar quotes its figure at 95°F and 90% relative humidity, which is a very warm, very damp condition. Capacity figures measured in hot, wet conditions are typically much higher than figures at cooler temperatures, so in a cool basement the real daily output will usually be lower. That isn't a flaw. It simply means the headline figure is best used to compare machines that were measured under the same conditions.

The 8,500 square foot coverage figure is likewise a maximum. Ceiling height, how damp the space is and how well it is sealed all change how quickly any unit gets humidity down.

Draining: pump or gravity

At this capacity, emptying a bucket by hand isn't practical, so the unit offers two ways to drain. The built-in automatic pump pushes condensate out through a hose, and Waykar says it can discharge water up to 16.4 feet (about 5 metres) in any direction, including upward, which helps when the nearest drain or sink sits above the floor. A gravity drain hose is also included for when the water can simply run downhill to a floor drain. Gravity drainage avoids running the pump, which saves a little energy.

Airflow and drying

The listing gives the airflow as 371 CFM (cubic feet per minute). Higher airflow moves more air across the cold coil and helps dry surfaces such as wooden floors and wall framing. That is why Waykar positions the machine for water-damage restoration, flood clean-ups and construction drying as well as for permanently damp spaces.

Built-in protections

Waykar lists several features meant to make long, unattended running easier:

  • Overload protection against power surges or misuse.
  • Memory function, which restores your settings after a power outage.
  • Automatic defrost, which clears frost that can build on the coil when the air is cool.

Compressor dehumidifiers typically work less efficiently as air temperature drops, so defrost is a useful feature for cold basements and garages.

Moving it around

With a weight of about 116.8 lb (roughly 53 kg), this is not a unit you carry. Waykar fits it with large wheels, wheel locks and a removable push handle, and gives its dimensions as 17.9 x 24.0 x 31.9 inches (about 45 x 61 x 81 cm). Plan the route through doorways and stairs before you buy; it is easiest to use where it can be rolled on a level floor.

Warranty and support

Waykar states a five-year compressor warranty, a two-year return guarantee on all models and lifelong technical support. Terms vary by region and seller, so read the exact conditions that come with your unit.

What to check before you buy

  • Space and conditions: compare the rated coverage with your room size, and remember that capacity falls in cooler air.
  • Drain route: decide whether you will use the pump hose, the gravity hose or both, and where the water will end up.
  • Power: confirm the voltage, plug type and circuit you will use, and follow the manual and local electrical codes.
  • Size and weight: measure doors and stairs, and check you have a clear floor path.
  • Noise: a commercial compressor and fan are louder than a household unit, so think about where people will be working.
  • Upkeep: the filter is washable; check the manual for how often to clean it and how to look after the coil.
  • What's in the box: confirm the pump hose, drain hose and handle are included.
