The Waykar CTH80A is a large-capacity dehumidifier for damp basements, laundry areas, storage rooms and humid homes. It pulls moisture out of the air into a tank or a drain hose, which helps reduce condensation and unpleasant odours. Here is what its main figures mean and what to think about before setting one up.
What 80 pints a day really means
Waykar rates the CTH80A at up to 80 pints of moisture removed per day, measured at 95°F (35°C) and 90% relative humidity. Those are very warm, very humid conditions. In a cooler basement or a room that is only moderately damp, any compressor dehumidifier typically removes noticeably less water per day, so treat the headline figure as a maximum rather than a daily average.
The coverage figure of up to 5,000 sq ft is the brand's. How much area a dehumidifier can really keep dry depends on how damp the space is, how well it is sealed, and whether doors between rooms stay open.
Humidity settings and Comfort Mode
You can set a target humidity anywhere from 30% to 80%. Many guides suggest keeping indoor humidity roughly between 30% and 50%, which falls within that range.
Comfort Mode chooses the target for you based on room temperature: 55% below 65°F, 50% between 65°F and 77°F, and 45% above 77°F. The idea is to avoid over-drying when it is cool and to dry more firmly when it is warm. Waykar lists the humidity sensing at ±5%. The control panel also has an auto mode, adjustable fan speed, a water-full alert and a 24-hour timer.
Noise
Waykar lists the sound level at 40dB on the low setting and no more than 55dB. For context, 40dB is roughly the level of a quiet room, while 55dB is closer to a normal conversation. Compressor dehumidifiers also make a low hum when the compressor starts, so placement on a level, solid floor helps keep vibration down.
Draining and moving it
Water collects in a removable tank, which the brand's images show at 1.24 gallons (about 4.7 litres). When the tank is full, the unit stops running. For hands-free use, the included 3.3 ft (about 1 m) hose drains continuously; a garden hose with a 12.7mm (half-inch) inner diameter can extend it, though one isn't included. Gravity draining only works when the hose runs downhill all the way to a floor drain or sink.
Built-in wheels and a handle make it easier to move, and the cord wraps around the back when you put it away. At about 12.2 x 9 x 19.7 inches and 27.2 lb, it is a full-size unit rather than a small room model.
Efficiency and built-in safeguards
The CTH80A meets the 2025 ENERGY STAR standard and is ETL listed for electrical standards. ENERGY STAR is the US efficiency programme run by the Environmental Protection Agency, so the label tells you it meets that programme's efficiency criteria for dehumidifiers.
Several protections are built in. Auto-defrost works down to 42°F (about 6°C), which matters in cool basements where coils can frost over. The compressor waits three minutes before restarting, error codes help with troubleshooting, and an overflow guard blocks backflow through the hose. The mesh screen is washable and reusable. Waykar lists a one-year warranty plus a second-year extended warranty.
Who it suits
It suits homes with a damp basement, a humid laundry or storage area, or larger open spaces where a smaller unit would struggle. It is less of a fit for a single small room, where a compact model takes up less space.
What to check before you buy
- Your space: consider the size and dampness of the area, and whether doors between rooms stay open.
- Drainage: check there is a floor drain or sink lower than the unit if you want continuous draining.
- Temperature: in very cool spaces, any compressor dehumidifier removes less water and defrosts more often.
- Noise: think about where it will sit if it runs in or near a bedroom.
- Upkeep: plan to wash the mesh filter regularly and empty the tank if you don't use the hose.
The short version
- Removes up to 80 pints a day (at 95°F and 90% RH) and covers up to 5,000 sq ft.
- Humidity range of 30-80%, plus a Comfort Mode that sets 45-55% from the room temperature.
- 40dB on low and at most 55dB, according to Waykar.
- Removable tank or continuous draining through the included 3.3 ft hose, with auto-stop when full.
- 2025 ENERGY STAR, ETL listed, auto-defrost down to 42°F, wheels and a washable filter.
