The Waterdrop WD-EDFA is a 15-cup countertop filter pitcher that dispenses water at the touch of a button. A built-in rechargeable battery powers the dispenser, and a filter with an alkaline stage is included. Waterdrop positions it as a more convenient alternative to a standard pour-through pitcher.

One-touch electric dispensing

Standard pitchers need you to hold the jug while it filters or pours. Waterdrop says this one dispenses automatically at one touch, so you don't have to hold anything or wait. That can be helpful for filling bottles and glasses, and for anyone who finds lifting a full jug awkward.

Battery and charging

The pitcher has a built-in battery and a USB Type-C charging cable. A charging adapter is not included. Waterdrop says one full charge lasts about 30 days when you draw 101 to 135 oz of water a day. Treat that as a guide, as use patterns vary.

What the filter is certified for

Waterdrop says the pitcher is certified by IAPMO against NSF/ANSI 42 and 372. Standard 42 covers aesthetic effects such as chlorine taste and odour. Standard 372 covers lead-free construction of materials in contact with drinking water. The filter uses a 5 µm carbon block, which Waterdrop says gives high-accuracy adsorption with no carbon leakage, and the company lists reduction of 30+ contaminants, citing third-party lab tests. The title also mentions PFOA/PFOS, chlorine and lead; for exactly which contaminants are covered and to what level, read the performance data sheet that comes with the product.

The alkaline stage

Waterdrop says the alkaline release stage lasts twice as long as before and raises the starting pH by 1.5 to 2.5. In general, pH is a measure of acidity, and the effect of any alkaline stage depends on your starting water and filter age.

Filter life

Replace the filter after 200 gallons or three months, whichever comes first, according to Waterdrop. The listing says replacement filters are sold in packs for model WD-EDFA. Replacing on time matters for any carbon filter, since an old filter reduces performance.

Size and use

The pitcher measures about 6.7 x 9.5 x 10.2 inches (17 x 24 x 26 cm). Waterdrop says its handle makes it easy to move between kitchen, living room, office, fridge or camping.

Who it suits

It suits households that drink a lot of filtered water and want a hands-free dispenser, and offices or dorm rooms with limited counter space. People wanting a purely manual pitcher with no charging may prefer a simpler type.

What to check before you buy

  • Charging: you need a USB charging adapter, which isn't included.
  • Fridge fit: measure shelf height if you want to keep it chilled.
  • Certification: read the performance data sheet for the contaminants you care about, and check your own water report.
  • Filter schedule: note the 200-gallon or three-month replacement point, and the replacement model.
  • Cleaning: follow the manual on cleaning the pitcher and the electric parts.
