The Waterdrop G5P700A is an under-sink reverse osmosis (RO) system. It filters tap water through eight stages, adds minerals back at the end, and delivers it through a separate faucet with an LED display. It is a tankless design, so there is no large storage tank under the sink.

What reverse osmosis does

An RO system pushes water through a very fine membrane. Waterdrop lists the membrane at 0.0001 micron. Typically, RO membranes remove a wide range of dissolved substances, which is why the water can taste noticeably different. The listing says the 8 stages are tested by SGS and reduce chlorine, bad taste and odour, among other things. Check the manufacturer's data sheet for the exact list of reductions.

The alkaline mineral stage

RO removes most minerals along with other dissolved substances. The G5P700A adds a mineralization stage that, according to the listing, puts calcium, magnesium, sodium and potassium ions back and gives the water an alkaline pH. This mainly changes the taste and feel of the water. The listing also mentions NSF/ANSI 372 certification, a standard about lead content in the materials that touch the water. It is not a performance claim for contaminant reduction.

Tankless design and flow rate

Older RO systems use a storage tank. A tankless system, such as this one, produces water on demand, which the listing says frees up to 70% of the under-sink space. The system is rated at 700 GPD (gallons per day), and the listing says it fills a 6-ounce cup in about 6 seconds. GPD is a membrane capacity figure under test conditions, so real flow depends on your water pressure, temperature and water quality.

Pure-to-drain ratio

RO systems send some water to the drain to carry away what the membrane rejects. The listing gives a 2:1 pure-to-drain ratio, meaning two parts filtered water for each part sent to the drain. Older systems typically waste more.

Smart LED faucet and installation

The system comes with a smart LED faucet. The listing says that installing the faucet requires drilling a hole in the countertop unless your sink or counter already has a spare hole. Plumbing connections go under the sink, so follow the manual and local plumbing codes, or hire a plumber.

Size

The unit measures 5.7 x 16.7 x 13.9 inches (about 14.5 x 42 x 35 cm) and weighs 21.4 lb (about 9.7 kg).

Who it suits

It suits households that want filtered drinking and cooking water from a dedicated tap, and that want to avoid a tank taking up cabinet space.

What to check before you buy

  • Cabinet space: measure the area under your sink against the dimensions above.
  • Countertop: confirm you can drill a faucet hole, or have one available.
  • Water pressure: RO systems typically need adequate pressure; check the manual for the minimum.
  • Power: a tankless system with a pump needs an outlet nearby.
  • Filter changes: find out how often the stages are replaced and how you buy them.
  • Drain connection: check that the drain saddle suits your drain pipe.

The short version

  • A tankless under-sink reverse osmosis system with 8 stages and a 0.0001 micron membrane.
  • Alkaline mineral stage adds calcium, magnesium, sodium and potassium.
  • 700 GPD capacity and a 2:1 pure-to-drain ratio.
  • Smart LED faucet; installation requires a countertop hole.
  • NSF/ANSI 372 certified, per the listing; follow the manual and local codes.
