The Waterdrop G5P700-PRO is a tankless reverse osmosis (RO) system that sits under the kitchen sink. Its "dual-flow" design sends reverse osmosis water to a dedicated faucet for drinking and cooking, and filtered water to your main kitchen faucet for washing. Here is what its specifications mean, and what to think about before fitting one.
How the two water lines work
The RO line passes through seven stages of filtration and ends at the separate faucet that comes with the system. The second line, according to the product images, takes water after the carbon fibre (CF) filter stage and sends it to your existing kitchen faucet, so washing fruit, vegetables and dishes uses filtered water too. Waterdrop says you can also connect the system to a dishwasher, refrigerator or ice maker.
What reverse osmosis does
Reverse osmosis pushes water through a very fine membrane that holds back most dissolved substances. Here the membrane is listed at 0.0001 microns. Waterdrop lists reductions in TDS (total dissolved solids), PFOA, PFOS, lead, fluoride and nitrate, and marks these figures as third-party tested. The product images also give a 95% TDS reduction.
Every RO system also sends some water to the drain, carrying away what the membrane holds back. According to the product images, this one has a pure-to-drain ratio of 2:1, meaning about two parts of RO water for every part sent to the drain. Because RO removes most minerals as well, many people notice the water tastes softer or flatter than tap water.
Certifications
The system is certified to NSF/ANSI 58 and NSF/ANSI 372. NSF/ANSI 58 is the standard for reverse osmosis drinking water systems, and NSF/ANSI 372 covers the lead content of the materials that touch the water; this is what "lead-free" refers to here. Certifications cover specific claims, so if a particular contaminant matters to you, check the certification details.
What 700 GPD means
GPD stands for gallons per day: how much RO water the system can make over 24 hours. 700 gallons a day works out to roughly half a gallon (about 1.8 litres) per minute. Because there is no storage tank, water is filtered as you draw it instead of waiting in a tank to refill. Waterdrop notes that the maximum flow the faucet can take is 1.00 gpm, and that the flow rate refers to the faucet rather than the whole system. Real-world output also depends on your water pressure and temperature, as with most RO systems.
Size, installation and the faucet display
The unit measures 16.69 x 5.69 x 13.9 inches (about 42 x 14.5 x 35 cm), a compact size for a sink cabinet. According to the product images, the RO faucet stands about 13.7 inches tall, drilling may be needed to fit it, and you should leave at least 1 inch of space above the unit and about 4 inches for the pipes.
The RO faucet has a display that shows water quality as a TDS reading, with a filter life reminder and a fault alert. The product images give a filter life of about 24 months for the RO filter and 6 months for the CF filter, and note that actual life depends on local water quality.
Who it suits
It suits households that drink and cook with a lot of water and want filtered water at the main faucet as well. The tankless design makes sense in kitchens where cabinet space is tight.
What to check before you buy
- Space: measure the sink cabinet, including room above the unit and for the pipes.
- Faucet hole: check whether your sink or countertop has a spare hole, or whether drilling is needed.
- Your water: a water test shows which contaminants matter in your area.
- Water pressure: check the system's requirements against your home's supply.
- Filters: note the replacement intervals and how easy replacements are to get.
The short version
- A tankless under-sink reverse osmosis system with two outputs: RO water at its own faucet, filtered water at the kitchen faucet.
- Seven-stage RO filtration with a 0.0001 micron membrane; Waterdrop lists third-party-tested reductions in TDS, PFOA, PFOS, lead, fluoride and nitrate.
- Certified to NSF/ANSI 58 and 372.
- Rated at 700 GPD, with a faucet display for TDS, filter life and faults.
- 16.69 x 5.69 x 13.9 inches.
