The Waterdrop ED04W-L (model WD-ED04W-L) is a large filtered-water dispenser in white with a 27-cup capacity and an electric pump. Instead of tipping a heavy pitcher, you press to pour. It runs from a built-in rechargeable battery, so it can sit on a counter, in a living room or come along to a campsite.

What it filters, and what it doesn't

Waterdrop says the filter is certified by IAPMO to NSF/ANSI standards 42, 53, 401 and 372, and reduces more than 45 substances, including chlorine, lead, mercury, benzene and bisphenol A. A third-party lab also tested it for PFOA and PFOS, the brand states. In general, these standards cover taste and odour, specific contaminants, emerging contaminants and lead-free materials respectively.

One point the brand makes very clearly: this system does not lower TDS. Waterdrop points readers who want lower TDS to a different model, the WD-ED25TW.

Capacity

Twenty-seven cups is a lot for a pitcher-style product. Waterdrop positions it for several people at once and for fewer refills. A bigger reservoir also takes up more room in the fridge, if you chill it, so it is worth checking where it will sit. The dimensions are 7.1 x 12.0 x 10.2 inches.

Electric dispensing and battery

A built-in battery drives the dispenser, and Waterdrop quotes 30 days of use on a single charge. Actual battery life will vary with how much water you dispense. Because it needs no wall socket while in use, placement is flexible.

Why an electric dispenser

A 27-cup pitcher would be heavy to lift and tilt when full. Moving the pouring job to a pump means the water simply comes out at the touch of a button, which Waterdrop highlights as a way to free people from lifting heavy pitchers. The brand also lists the kitchen, living room, bedroom, camping and RV as places it can be used, since the battery removes the need for a socket nearby.

Who it suits

It fits larger households, shared spaces and offices that go through a lot of drinking water and want a gravity-style filter without constant refilling. Anyone mainly after low-TDS water should read the brand's note above carefully, since this model is not designed for that.

Filter life

The filter is rated for 200 gallons or three months, depending on local water conditions and use. Water with more sediment or chlorine typically shortens a filter's life.

What to check before you buy

  • Your goal: the filter does not reduce TDS; confirm it covers what you want to reduce in your water.
  • Fit: measure the shelf or counter space, and the fridge if you plan to chill it.
  • Charging: note how you will recharge it and how often.
  • Filter changes: plan for a replacement about every three months or 200 gallons.
  • Filling and cleaning: a large tank is heavier to move when full, so think about how you will fill and wash it.
