The Waterdrop A2G (model WD-A2G) is a countertop reverse osmosis system that also heats and chills the water it produces. It needs no plumbing, so you fill the feed tank, plug it in and use it in a kitchen, living room, office or RV. A 40 oz pitcher is included.
How the filtration works
Waterdrop describes six stages with a 0.0001 micron RO membrane. The brand states that third-party testing shows reductions in TDS, PFOA, PFOS, chlorine and more. Reverse osmosis in general forces water through a very fine membrane, which blocks many dissolved particles and leaves water low in minerals.
Added minerals
The A2G adds strontium and H₄SiO₄ (a form of silicon) back into the water. Waterdrop calls these alkaline minerals. The effect you can expect is mainly on taste; for anything beyond that, refer to the brand's own product information.
Hot and cold
The unit cools to 59°F (15°C) or heats to 203°F (95°C). Favorite Mode stores a preferred temperature and volume so the same setting is available next time. As water at 203°F is close to boiling, handle it carefully.
The 3:1 ratio
Waterdrop gives a 3:1 pure water ratio, which it says produces 12 times as much pure water as traditional RO systems. The brand also says the composite filter is designed to be easy to replace and that the system reduces reliance on bottled water.
Pitcher and portability
The unit weighs 22 lb and measures 15.9 x 8.2 x 15.7 inches. It is portable in the sense that it needs only an outlet and water for the tank. During flushing, Waterdrop says you should not lift the pure water pitcher, as this can interrupt the flush.
Who it suits
This kind of unit fits people who want RO-filtered water with hot and cold options but have no way to plumb in a system, such as renters, small offices and RV owners. It also suits households that want a single appliance on the counter in place of a separate kettle and cold-water pitcher. The trade-off is hands-on upkeep: the feed tank needs filling, and the pitcher and tanks need regular cleaning.
What to check before you buy
- Space: check the width, depth and height against your counter and any cabinets above.
- Power: it needs an outlet for heating and cooling.
- Refilling: you fill the feed tank by hand, and the system produces some waste water.
- Hot water: consider where the unit sits if children are around.
- Filter changes: find out the replacement schedule and how you would order filters.
- First use: follow the manual's flushing steps.
