The Waterdrop gravity-fed water filter system (listed as WD-GF-2.25G) is a countertop stainless steel water dispenser with a 2.25-gallon capacity. It filters tap water by gravity, with no plumbing or electricity, so it works in a kitchen, at a campsite or during a power outage.
How a gravity-fed filter works
Water is poured into the upper chamber. Gravity pulls it through the filters into the lower chamber, where it is drawn off through a spigot. Because there is no pump, filtering is slower than with a pressurized system, and the filters need priming before first use. Waterdrop includes a priming washer to help flush the filters.
The filters
The system comes with four filters: two coconut shell activated carbon blocks and two white fluoride filters. Waterdrop says the carbon blocks reduce chlorine (up to 99%), taste, odour, sediment, sand and rust, while the fluoride filters reduce fluoride. It also says silver ions are infused into the filters to discourage the growth of unwanted organisms inside them.
Listed capacities are up to 6,000 gallons for each carbon filter and up to 1,000 gallons for each fluoride filter. Waterdrop uses these figures to estimate that the system could replace more than 56,000 16.9-oz plastic bottles. Real filter life depends on your water quality and how much you use, so follow the replacement guidance in the manual.
Certifications
Waterdrop states that the carbon filters are certified by IAPMO R&T against NSF/ANSI 42 for reduction of chlorine, taste and odour, and against NSF/ANSI 372 for lead content (≤0.25%, a standard for "lead-free" materials). Check the certification documents for the exact claims and which parts they cover.
Capacity and build
The 2.25-gallon capacity is described as suited to a family of four, and to gatherings or camping trips. The body is food-grade 304 stainless steel with a stainless steel spigot. Waterdrop mentions concealed holes that keep the flow steady. The unit measures 9.8 x 10.0 x 16.5 inches (about 25 x 25 x 42 cm).
Who it suits
It suits households that want filtered water without installing anything, renters, people who camp or travel with a vehicle, and anyone who wants a backup during outages. Because it works from a tank, it is not a tap-fed system.
What to check before you buy
- Your water: the filters address the substances Waterdrop lists. If you have specific concerns, check your local water report. These filters are not described for treating unsafe water sources.
- Counter space: the unit is about 16.5 inches tall, so check clearance under cupboards.
- Filter replacement: note the replacement schedule and availability of the filters.
- Speed: gravity filtering is gradual, so plan to refill ahead of time.
- Cleaning: follow the manual for washing and setup.
