The Waterdrop 15UB (model WD-15UB) is a single-housing water filter that sits under the kitchen sink and supplies a separate faucet for filtered water. It is built around an activated carbon block, and it is aimed at homes on municipal tap water that want chlorine taste and odour reduced at a dedicated tap. Here is what its specs mean and what to check before installing one.

How a carbon block filter works

Activated carbon has a huge internal surface that adsorbs chlorine and many other compounds as water passes through. In a carbon block, the carbon is compressed into a solid cylinder, so it also traps fine particles. Waterdrop says its multistage filtration reduces chlorine, PFAS including PFOA and PFOS, heavy metals, sediment and other particles, and that the carbon is made from coconut shells.

Carbon filters work differently from reverse osmosis systems. They don't send water to a drain while filtering, and they don't remove dissolved minerals. Waterdrop points this out itself: a TDS meter won't show a drop after this filter, because calcium, magnesium and similar minerals stay in the water.

What the certifications cover

The system is certified by IAPMO against two NSF/ANSI standards:

  • NSF/ANSI 42 covers aesthetic effects: here, the reduction of chlorine, taste and odour.
  • NSF/ANSI 372 covers the materials, confirming that the parts in contact with water are lead-free.

Waterdrop also says a third-party laboratory tested it against NSF/ANSI 53 for lead reduction. That is a lab test reported by the brand, not part of the IAPMO certification. If a particular contaminant matters to you, read the performance data sheet and the certifier's online listing for WD-15UB, which state exactly what was tested and at what levels.

Installation

The filter connects to a cold water supply only, using push-to-connect fittings and an included feed water adapter. A converter lets it join either 3/8-inch or 1/2-inch cold water lines. The dedicated faucet is lead-free brushed stainless steel and needs a hole in the countertop or sink deck. Many sinks have a spare hole for a sprayer or soap dispenser; otherwise, drilling is needed.

The housing is about 16 inches tall and under 4 inches wide, and it can be mounted upright or on its side, which helps in cabinets crowded with pipes or a waste disposal unit. The filter label gives a working pressure of 10-100 psi (0.7-6.8 bar) and an operating temperature of 35-100°F (2-38°C).

Flow rate in practice

Waterdrop gives a tested flow rate of 0.75 gallons per minute at 60 psi, or about 2.8 litres a minute. That fills a one-litre bottle in roughly 20 seconds, which is typical for a dedicated drinking-water tap. Flow will be lower if your water pressure is lower.

Filter changes and upkeep

The filter uses a twist-and-lock design, so changing it takes seconds and needs no tools. The replacement cartridge is the WD-RF15, and Waterdrop gives the filter a 24-month lifespan. Real-world filter life always depends on how much water you use and on the quality of the water coming in. Waterdrop also says the filter's larger dirt-holding area helps reduce clogging.

Who it suits

It suits households on city water that want filtered water at a separate tap without a jug in the fridge, and that have limited space under the sink. It can also go in an RV or an office kitchen. It is not designed for well water or hot water lines.

What to check before you buy

  • Water source: municipal tap water and a cold supply only.
  • Countertop: a spare hole for the faucet, or permission and tools to drill one.
  • Cabinet space: room for a housing about 16 inches tall, upright or sideways.
  • Water pressure: within 10-100 psi.
  • What you want reduced: check the performance data sheet; if you want lower TDS, this type of filter won't do that.

The short version

  • An under-sink carbon block filter with its own lead-free stainless steel faucet.
  • IAPMO certified to NSF/ANSI 42 (chlorine, taste, odour) and NSF/ANSI 372 (lead-free materials).
  • 0.75 gpm at 60 psi; cold municipal water only.
  • Push-to-connect fittings and a 3/8-1/2-inch converter; mounts upright or on its side.
  • Twist-and-lock filter changes without tools; it keeps dissolved minerals in the water.
