The VEVOR YMK60208 is a countertop water distiller with a 6-litre (1.6 gallon) tank and a 900W heating element. It boils tap water, condenses the steam and collects the result in a glass carafe. VEVOR positions it for homes, offices and laboratories, and for uses such as coffee brewing water.

How a distiller works

Distillation is a simple idea. Water is heated to steam, which leaves behind most dissolved minerals and many other substances that do not evaporate with it. The steam is then cooled and turns back into liquid. A fan on this model carries heat away so the steam condenses. VEVOR says the unit can remove most impurities from tap water.

Distillation is slow compared with a filter jug. It produces water in batches, and the process takes hours for a full tank.

Output and timing

VEVOR gives the speed as more than 0.34 gallons (1.3 L) per hour, and says the machine can distill up to 8.16 gallons (31.2 L) in a day. A timer from 0 to 99 hours can be set, and a display shows time and temperature. In practice, you fill the tank, set the timer and come back to a carafe of distilled water.

Materials

  • Tank: 304 stainless steel interior.
  • Carafe: high borosilicate glass, a type of glass that handles heat changes well.
  • Water contact parts: food-grade materials throughout, according to VEVOR.
  • Fan and cover: the brand has replaced a plastic fan with a four-blade aluminum one, and the exhaust cover is 304 stainless steel, both intended for better heat dissipation and a longer service life.

Carbon packs, scale and cleaning

The unit comes with replacement activated carbon packs, and VEVOR recommends changing them regularly. Carbon is commonly used to take up odours and some volatile compounds from steam. Boiling water leaves scale (mineral deposits) inside the tank over time, particularly in hard-water areas. VEVOR notes that citric acid can remove scale and suggests regular cleaning of the interior. Follow the manual for quantities and rinsing.

Size

It measures about 11.8 x 11.8 x 19.7 inches (30 x 30 x 50 cm) and weighs 12.6 lb (about 5.7 kg). It is tall, so check the clearance under your cabinets, and keep it away from the edge of the counter while it is hot.

Who it suits

It suits households and workplaces that want distilled water for appliances, brewing or other everyday uses, and who accept a slow, batch-based process. Use the water for any specialist or equipment purpose only as the equipment maker advises.

What to check before you buy

  • Daily volume: compare about 1.3 L per hour with the amount you actually need.
  • Power: a 900W element runs for hours, so check the outlet and don't leave it where it can be knocked.
  • Space and heat: the unit gets hot and releases steam and warm air, so give it room.
  • Upkeep: plan for replacing carbon packs and descaling.
  • Water use: check the manual for the intended uses of the output and for any limits.
  • Supervision: follow the manual on running it unattended.
