The COSORI CRC-R501-KUS is a 10-cup electric rice cooker that goes well beyond plain white rice. It offers 18 functions, from brown rice and oatmeal to steaming, slow cooking and sautéing, and it controls the cooking process with fuzzy logic. It is aimed at households that cook rice often and want one appliance to handle several jobs.

What fuzzy logic does

A basic rice cooker switches off when the pot reaches a set temperature. A fuzzy logic (micom) model has a small computer chip that adjusts the heat through the cooking stages. COSORI says its chip automatically compensates for conditions such as humidity and heat, and runs a seven-step cooking process for fluffy, even results. In general, this is most useful with grains that are fussy about timing, such as brown rice.

Dual heating elements

COSORI says there are heating elements at the top and bottom, each with temperature sensors. Heating from above as well as below typically reduces the condensation that drips back onto the rice from the lid, which helps avoid soggy results.

Rice types and texture settings

The listing describes separate programs for white and brown rice. For white rice you can choose long grain such as jasmine, medium or short grain such as sushi or sweet rice, and a porridge setting for congee. Brown rice has long grain (including wild rice), medium or short grain, and porridge. Both can be set to soft, regular or hard texture.

Other programs include steel-cut, rolled and quick-cooking oatmeal, and grains such as quinoa, barley and farro. A Quick Rice setting cooks white rice faster using the full 1000W of power.

Steam, slow cook and sauté

The cooker comes with a stainless steel steam basket with a 3-quart capacity, for vegetables, fish, chicken, eggs and seafood. COSORI notes the basket is not for cooking rice. Slow Cook mode suits soups and stews, and Sauté lets you brown vegetables or meat in the inner pot before cooking. COSORI says the pot stays in place while you sauté.

Keep warm and delay timer

There is an automatic 24-hour keep-warm function and a 24-hour delay timer, so you can load the pot in the morning and have rice ready for the evening. As a general food-handling rule, rice shouldn't be left sitting for long periods unless the manual allows it, so follow COSORI's guidance on both functions and on food storage.

Size and cleaning

The cooker measures about 10.6 x 12.3 x 9.2 in (27 x 31 x 23 cm) and weighs 9.3 lb (4.2 kg). It runs on 120V at 1000W. COSORI says the non-stick inner pot, the detachable inner lid and the steam cap are dishwasher-safe, and the listing mentions 50 chef-made recipes and a guided touch display with measurement marks in the pot.

Who it suits

It suits families, meal-preppers and anyone who regularly cooks different kinds of rice or grains. A smaller cooker may be enough for one or two people who cook rice only occasionally, since a 10-cup model takes up more room.

What to check before you buy

  • Capacity: cup sizes on rice cookers are usually the small cup that comes with the cooker, not a standard US measuring cup, so check the manual.
  • Counter and storage space: measure the footprint and the height with the lid open.
  • Non-stick care: check which utensils the manual allows in the inner pot.
  • Power: confirm it suits a 120V outlet.
  • Dishwasher fit: check that the pot and lid fit your dishwasher.
  • Steam basket: note that it isn't for rice.
