The VEVOR commercial vegetable chopper (model J002-01/02) is a manual, lever-operated dicer. You place a vegetable under the push block, pull down the handle, and the produce is pushed through a grid of blades, coming out as 1/4-inch (about 6 mm) pieces or sticks. It is meant for restaurants and busy home kitchens that do a lot of repetitive cutting.

How a lever dicer works

The pull-down handle uses leverage, so a modest push on the handle produces much more force at the blades. That lets you cut firm items such as potatoes and carrots in one stroke rather than slicing and dicing by hand. Because every piece goes through the same grid, the pieces come out the same size, which helps with even cooking and consistent salads, fries and sautés.

Materials and blades

VEVOR says the body is stainless steel and aluminium alloy, and describes it as corrosion-proof. The blades are 420 stainless steel, a common food-grade knife steel, and the blade set is the 1/4-inch size. Two spare blades come with each blade set, which is helpful if an edge gets damaged on a hard piece. The weight is about 5.3 lb, and the footprint is roughly 8.7 inches square and 18.5 inches tall with the handle.

What it cuts, and what it doesn't

VEVOR lists potatoes, carrots, cucumbers, mushrooms, peppers and onions, among others, and says it can prepare ingredients for salads, French fries and desserts. There are some cautions in the listing:

  • It is not suited to directly slicing apples, pears or sweet potatoes.
  • Apples and pears should be cored and cut into small pieces first.
  • Sweet potatoes should be steamed until semi-cooked before use.

Very hard or oversized items typically need trimming to fit under the push block.

Stability and cleaning

Four non-slip, shock-absorbing feet keep the machine from sliding on the counter while you press. The blades and push block are removable and washable, which makes cleaning easier than with fixed-blade machines. As with any bladed kitchen tool, wash carefully, handle the blade set by its frame, and follow the manual's cleaning advice.

Who it suits

It suits small restaurants, food stalls and catering kitchens, as well as home cooks who batch-prep for meal planning, canning, salsa or large family meals. If you only chop one onion now and then, a knife is likely to be quicker to set up and clean.

What to check before you buy

  • Cut size: this is the 1/4-inch blade set only; check whether you need a different cut.
  • Food size: confirm that your usual vegetables fit through the chopper frame, and plan to trim larger ones.
  • Counter space: it stands about 18.5 inches tall, so make sure it fits under cupboards.
  • Cleaning: the removable parts need hand-cleaning around the blade grid, so allow time for it.
  • Spare parts: the two spare blades are included, but check whether you want extras for heavy use.
  • Safe handling: keep fingers clear of the blade area and use the push block.
