The VEVOR 8-gallon (30 L) still is a stainless steel and copper distilling kit with a boiler, a thumper keg, a condenser, a thermometer and a circulating water pump. VEVOR sells it for distilling fruit wine, brandy and water at home. Distilling rules differ widely between countries and regions, so the first step is to find out what is permitted where you live.

How a pot still works

Distilling relies on a simple fact: different liquids boil at different temperatures. The boiler is heated, the vapour rises, and the vapour is cooled back into liquid in a condenser. VEVOR describes it as heating the raw material to selectively boil it, then cooling to condense the vapour. This is a pot still design, which is typically simpler than column stills and is often used for spirits where some character from the starting material is wanted.

The boiler and what you can heat it on

VEVOR gives the boiler capacity as 8 US gallons (30 L), with a body of about 13.8 inches (35 cm) across and 15.7 inches (40 cm) tall. The material is stainless steel with red copper. VEVOR says the base is thickened so it works with gas stoves, ceramic hobs, electric coil stoves and induction cookers. Check the pot's base against your own heat source, and follow the manual.

Thumper keg and condenser

The kit includes two kegs. The thumper keg (about 7 x 4.3 inches, or 18 x 11 cm) sits between the boiler and the condenser. In general, a thumper passes the vapour through a second chamber, and VEVOR says it is a place to add flavours. The condenser keg (about 7.9 x 4.3 inches, or 20 x 11 cm) holds the copper coil where vapour turns back to liquid.

Cooling and the water pump

VEVOR describes an open-type cooling design in which copper coils, chosen for fast heat transfer, sit in coolant. A circulating water pump is included to reuse cooling water. Water enters through the lower inlet and leaves from the upper outlet, so the coolest water meets the coil where it matters. Rubber pads under the condenser insulate it from heat. The tubes are food-grade silicone.

Thermometer, seals and air valve

A built-in thermometer on the lid shows Celsius and Fahrenheit, so you can monitor temperature during a run. Four quick clips and a silicone gasket in the lid are there to seal it tight, and a one-way air evacuation valve is included, which VEVOR mentions for grain fermentation. VEVOR says all parts that touch the product are food-grade silicone, stainless steel and copper.

What's in the box

The set includes the distiller, condenser keg, thermometer, one-way air evacuation valve, thumper keg, water circulating pump and a manual. It weighs about 15.8 lb (7.2 kg), and the packed size is roughly 18 x 18.5 x 18.5 inches (46 x 47 x 47 cm).

Who it suits

VEVOR calls it suitable for beginners and experienced users. It fits people who already know the rules where they live and want a complete kit. It can also be used for distilling water, as the listing states.

What to check before you buy

  • Local law: home distilling of alcohol is restricted or needs a licence in many places. Check the rules first.
  • Heat source: make sure your stove or cooker suits the boiler's size and weight.
  • Space and ventilation: allow room for the still, the pump and water, and good airflow. Heating alcohol vapour involves fire risk, so follow the manual's guidance.
  • Water supply: you need coolant for the condenser, and a spot for the pump and tubing.
  • Cleaning and upkeep: check the manual for cleaning steps and how to look after the copper.
  • Capacity: the listing gives slightly different capacity figures in places, so confirm the boiler volume before relying on it.

The short version

  • An 8-gallon (30 L) stainless steel and copper pot still kit with a thumper keg and condenser.
  • Includes a thermometer, water pump, silicone tubing, air valve and manual.
  • Works with gas, ceramic, electric coil and induction heat, per VEVOR.
  • Check your local laws before using it for alcohol.
