This VEVOR still is a 13.2-gallon (50 litre) stainless steel distillation kit with a copper coil condenser and a small circulating water pump. VEVOR markets it for home brewing and for making distilled water. Before looking at the hardware, a note on the law: rules on distilling alcohol at home differ widely between countries and regions, and in many places it needs a licence or is not allowed at all. Check your local rules first.
How a still works
Heating a liquid makes the more volatile components turn to vapour first. The vapour travels to a condenser, where cooling turns it back to liquid and it drips out as the distillate. The design here is a boiler, a lid with a thermometer, a condenser and tubing between them.
The boiler
The boiler barrel is listed as 15.7 inches in both diameter and height (about 40 cm) and holds 13.2 gallons, which VEVOR says allows up to 50 litres of raw material. Its thickened base (0.03 inch wall) allows different heat sources, and VEVOR names gas stoves, firewood and electric ceramic heaters. VEVOR notes the parts are food-grade silicone, stainless steel and copper. Model VV-AD-50L is described as having a distillation period of 2 to 3 hours.
Cooling system
The condenser keg is 7.9 inches in diameter by 4.7 inches high with a capacity of 0.92 gallons, and contains a copper coil 0.39 inch across. VEVOR says copper's fast heat conduction and the coil's large contact area help cool the vapour. A pump circulates cooling water to save water use. Cold water goes into the lower inlet and warm water leaves from the upper one. The listing says cooling circulation should be started when the temperature reaches about 80 degrees.
Thermometer, seals and valve
The lid carries a thermometer with Celsius and Fahrenheit scales. Silicone tubing, four buckles and silicone gaskets are intended to seal the lid, and a one-way exhaust valve is included for use during fermentation.
What is in the box
A fermentation barrel, condenser keg, water pump, thermometer, one-way air evacuation valve, a set of accessories and a user manual.
Who it suits
It suits hobbyists who are legally permitted to distil and want a larger-capacity kit. VEVOR also lists distilled water as a use, which may be of interest to those who want water for appliances or hobbies.
What to check before you buy
- Legality: confirm what is permitted where you live, including licensing and permitted products.
- Heat source: make sure your stove or heater can handle a 15.7 inch base and the load.
- Space and ventilation: use it in a well-ventilated area, away from open flames where alcohol vapour could collect.
- Water supply: plan for cooling water or a bucket for the pump.
- Cleaning: check how to clean the copper coil and tubing.
- Instructions: read the manual before the first run.
The short version
- A 13.2-gallon (50L) stainless steel still with a copper coil condenser.
- Circulating water pump, built-in thermometer and one-way exhaust valve.
- Boiler size 15.7 x 15.7 inches; condenser 7.9 x 4.7 inches.
- Works with several heat sources, according to VEVOR.
- Check local laws on distilling before buying or using.
