The VEVOR 4L water distiller is a countertop appliance that boils water and condenses the steam into a glass carafe. It has a 750W heater, a 304 stainless steel tank and a timer that runs from 0 to 99 hours. This page covers how it works, what the specs mean and what comes with it.

How a water distiller works

Distillation heats water until it turns to steam, then cools the steam back into liquid in a separate container. Most dissolved solids stay behind in the boiler, which is why distillers leave a mineral deposit that has to be cleaned out. VEVOR rates this unit at about 0.26 gallons (1 L) an hour, around 6 gallons a day, if it runs continuously.

Heater, tank and carafe

A 750W aluminium heating plate does the heating. The inner tank, inner cap and water outlet are 304 stainless steel, which VEVOR describes as food grade. The condensing coil in the exhaust cap is also 304 stainless steel, and the four-blade fan on top is aluminium, not plastic.

The carafe is borosilicate glass, a type that tolerates temperature changes, with a shake-proof silicone buffer and printed scale marks. VEVOR gives its capacity as up to 1.03 gallons (about 4 L), or around eight 16-oz cups.

Controls and timing

The panel shows both the set temperature and the actual temperature, with a switch between °C and °F. You can set the distilling time from 0 to 99 hours, and the unit has an automatic shut-off when the temperature exceeds 302°F. The listed temperature range is 86 to 226.4°F.

Included accessories

The box holds the distiller, the glass container, three carbon packages, a bottle of citric acid powder and a user manual. In general, citric acid is used to dissolve mineral scale from the boiler. Check the manual for how and how often to use it. VEVOR says carbon packages are provided for filtration.

Size and power

The machine is 9.3 inches across and 15.2 inches tall (about 24 x 39 cm) and weighs 7.9 lb (about 3.6 kg), and the listing shows 12.1 lb as the shipping weight. It runs on 110V/60Hz at 750W, so it plugs into a standard North American outlet.

Uses

VEVOR says the distiller suits offices, homes, labs and dental clinics, and that it can also be used for essential oils. If you plan to use it for other purposes, check local rules and the manual.

Who it suits

It suits households and small workplaces that want a countertop appliance to make small batches of distilled water, and who are willing to wait: at around one litre an hour, a full carafe takes several hours.

What to check before you buy

  • Speed: about 1 L per hour, so plan for the time it takes.
  • Counter space: allow room for the 15.2-inch height and for ventilation around the fan.
  • Supervision: the unit heats water to boiling, so follow the manual on when it may run unattended.
  • Scale and cleaning: plan on descaling with the citric acid as directed.
  • Water supply: you fill it by hand, so think about where the source water comes from.
