The VEVOR 1.1-gallon water distiller is a countertop appliance that boils water and condenses the steam into a carafe. It is meant for households, offices and small labs that want distilled water for uses such as appliances, hobbies or general use, produced at home in batches.

How a countertop distiller works

Distillation heats water until it turns to steam, leaving most dissolved solids behind. The steam then passes through a cooling coil, condenses, and drips into a container. VEVOR rates this unit's 750-watt heating element at up to 0.3 gallons (1 L) per hour, or about 6 gallons (24 L) per day. A built-in four-blade aluminum fan and a 304 stainless steel condensing coil handle the cooling.

Materials that touch the water

According to the brand, every part in contact with water is food-grade 304 stainless steel, including the internal tank, inner cap and water outlet. The 1.1-gallon (4 L) carafe is food-grade plastic that VEVOR says won't crack or break easily. The unit measures about 9.3 x 9.3 x 15.2 inches (24 x 24 x 39 cm) and weighs 7.9 lb (about 3.6 kg).

Timer and temperature display

The timer runs from 0 to 99 hours. VEVOR suggests setting 3.5 hours when distilling 1.1 gallons (4 L), which leaves a little water at the bottom of the tank at the end of the run. The brand says this helps reduce limescale. The control panel displays the set temperature, with a range of 30°C to 108°C (86°F to 226.4°F).

Protection features

VEVOR says dry-burning protection stops heating when the temperature exceeds 115°C (239°F), and the unit shuts down automatically above 150°C (302°F). As with any heating appliance, follow the manual on placement and supervision.

Carbon packs and cleaning

The package includes a bottle of cleaning powder and three replaceable carbon packs. Fitting a carbon pack at the water outlet is said to further treat the water and adjust its taste. The cleaning powder is for descaling the internal tank, and leaving some water behind after each run reduces limescale buildup in the first place. Mineral scale is the main upkeep task with any distiller, especially in hard-water areas.

Other uses

VEVOR lists essential oil and hydrosol making among the possible uses, helped by the long timer. Check local rules and the manual before using it for anything other than water.

Who it suits

It suits households and small workplaces that regularly need distilled water and have counter space and the patience for slow batches. At about one litre an hour, it is a steady, not a quick, source.

What to check before you buy

  • Volume: compare 1 L an hour with how much you actually use.
  • Counter space: you need room for the unit, the fan's airflow and the carafe.
  • Running time: a full batch takes hours, so plan for supervised or scheduled runs.
  • Water hardness: harder water means more frequent descaling.
  • Replacement parts: check carbon pack availability.
  • Noise: a fan runs during operation.
  • Carafe material: it is plastic, so consider whether that suits your storage needs.
