The Toshiba ML-EM45PIT is a 1.6 cubic foot countertop microwave with 1250 watts of output and inverter technology. It comes in a black stainless steel finish, and is meant for reheating, defrosting and everyday cooking. Here is what the specs mean.
What inverter technology changes
A conventional microwave controls power by switching the magnetron fully on and off in cycles, so a "50% power" setting is really bursts of full power. An inverter microwave typically delivers a steadier level of power instead. Toshiba says this gives more even heating and defrosting, and a more satisfying cooking experience. In practice, steady power is helpful for delicate jobs such as defrosting or melting.
Power, size and capacity
Toshiba lists 1250 watts of output and 1350 watts of input. The outside measures about 21.8 x 19.2 x 12.9 inches (55 x 49 x 33 cm) in width, depth and height, and the unit weighs 28.7 lb. The interior is 15.5 x 17.0 x 10.2 inches, and it has a 13.6-inch glass turntable, which is removable. A 13.6-inch turntable is large enough for most dinner plates, and for many 9 x 13-inch dishes you should check the interior dimensions against your cookware.
Sensor menus and auto defrost
The microwave has sensor-based menus: the listing refers to six smart sensor auto menus in the features and five in the description, so check the manual for the exact list. They cover foods such as pizza, potato and vegetables. A sensor detects the steam released as food heats and adjusts the cooking time and power automatically. Additional features include an easy defrost function, a one-touch popcorn button, 10 power levels and a memory function.
Controls and convenience
- Quick start: one press starts 1 to 3 minutes of cooking at full power.
- Express cook buttons: for 1 to 3 minutes.
- Mute: hold the "8" button for 3 to 5 seconds to turn the sound off.
- Eco mode, clock and kitchen timer.
- Display and light: a bright LCD display and cavity light.
Peel off the protective film covering the keypad before first use.
Child lock
A two-step child lock is built in. Toshiba says the door has to be opened following specific steps, shown in the manual, which helps prevent unintended use by young children. It is a helpful extra, but not a substitute for supervision.
Who it suits
It suits households that want a roomy countertop microwave for reheating leftovers, defrosting, and quick meals, and people who like having sensor programmes rather than guessing times.
What to check before you buy

- Power supply: a 1350W input draw needs a suitable outlet; follow the manual.
- Controls: check the manual to learn the sensor menus.
