The TOSHIBA ML-EM13PAITF(BS) is a 1.3 cubic foot (about 37-litre) countertop microwave with 1200W of power and no turntable. Its flat interior is designed for dishes that don't sit well on a spinning plate, such as rectangular casseroles, long platters or two plates side by side. Inverter heating, a moisture sensor and 11 power levels complete the feature list.

Why a flatbed interior matters

In a conventional microwave, food sits on a glass turntable that rotates so it passes through the uneven pattern of energy inside the cavity. That limits you to dishes that can spin freely: a long baking dish catches on the walls, and two dinner plates rarely fit side by side.

A flatbed design removes the turntable. Instead of moving the food, flatbed microwaves typically spread the energy from within the cavity itself, often with a stirrer hidden beneath the floor. TOSHIBA says the flat floor takes square, long or large dishes, or several plates at once, and with nothing spinning there is no turntable noise or stutter. The smooth floor is also simpler to clean: there is no glass tray to lift out and no roller ring to wipe around.

What inverter heating changes

Most traditional microwaves can only run at full power. When you choose a lower power level, they switch the power on and off in cycles, so food gets bursts of full heat with pauses in between. An inverter supplies a steady, reduced level of power instead.

TOSHIBA's Origin Inverter technology is designed for even cooking and precise temperature control. The brand also says it runs more quietly and can shorten cooking time and energy use. In general terms, steady low power is what helps with gentle jobs such as defrosting without cooking the edges, softening butter or warming delicate leftovers.

Sensor menus and power levels

A smart sensor detects the moisture released by food as it heats and adjusts the power by itself. That is the idea behind the pre-programmed sensor menus for everyday foods like pizza, pasta and vegetables: rather than guessing a time, you choose the food and let the sensor manage the heating.

For manual cooking there are 11 power levels, covering tasks from keeping food warm and softening butter to defrosting meat and heating drinks. A mute function switches off the beeps, which is handy in open-plan homes or when someone is asleep.

Size, finish and door

On the counter, the microwave measures about 20.4 inches wide, 14.6 inches deep and 12.5 inches tall (roughly 52 x 37 x 32 cm) and weighs about 25.8 lb (11.7 kg). The finish is black stainless steel.

The door opens in two steps: pull up and hold the release trigger, then pull the handle. It works differently from the push-button doors on many countertop models, so it is worth knowing about in advance.

Who it suits

This microwave suits kitchens that regularly reheat casserole dishes, pizza or several plates at a time, and cooks who want steadier control at low power for defrosting and gentle reheating. At 1.3 cubic feet, it sits in the middle of the usual countertop size range: roomy enough for family-sized dishes without taking over the counter.

What to check before you buy

  • Counter space: measure the spot, and allow the ventilation clearance the manual specifies around the sides, top and back.
  • Your largest dishes: measure the casserole or platter you use most and compare it with the interior dimensions in the manual or the brand's specifications.
  • Recipe timings: packet instructions assume a certain wattage, so expect to adjust times slightly at first.
  • The door: make sure the two-step trigger-and-handle release is comfortable for everyone in the household.
  • Power supply: follow the manual's electrical guidance, including where and how to plug it in.

The short version

  • A 1.3 cu ft (about 37 L), 1200W countertop microwave with a flat interior and no turntable.
  • Takes square, long or large dishes, or several plates at once, and the smooth floor wipes clean.
  • Origin Inverter heating for steady low power, plus a moisture sensor behind the auto menus.
  • 11 power levels and a mute function.
  • About 20.4 x 14.6 x 12.5 inches in black stainless steel, with a two-step door release.
