The TOPZEE TGK-17 is a 1.7-litre glass electric kettle with six preset temperatures, so water for green tea, black tea or coffee comes out at the setting you choose rather than always at a full boil. A 1500W concealed element heats it, and it can keep water warm for half an hour afterwards.

Why preset temperatures matter

Many teas are brewed below boiling. Green and white teas are typically made with water well under 100°C, while black tea is usually brewed with freshly boiled water. The kettle's presets are 160°F, 175°F, 185°F, 195°F, 200°F and 212°F (about 71, 79, 85, 91, 93 and 100°C).

In TOPZEE's own pairing, 160°F is for delicate tea, 175°F for green tea, 185°F for white tea, 195°F for oolong, 200°F for coffee, and a full boil for black tea. You pick a preset with a single touch on the handle.

How fast it heats

The 1500W element sits under the base plate, so there is no exposed coil inside the glass. TOPZEE says it boils 0.5 litres in about 2.5 minutes, and gives about 6.5 minutes for the full 1.7 litres, based on room-temperature tests. Heating to a lower preset takes less time than a full boil. 1500W is a common figure for full-size kettles on North American 120V outlets.

Keep-warm, memory and shut-off

After heating, a keep-warm mode holds the water at temperature for 30 minutes, handy for a second cup or a pot for guests. There's also a 2-minute memory function. An LED shows the kettle's status: blue while it's operating and white on standby.

The kettle switches off automatically when heating is done, and its boil-dry protection turns it off when the water level is too low.

Glass body and materials

The body is high borosilicate glass, a type of glass widely used for kitchenware because it copes with rapid temperature changes better than ordinary glass. The parts that touch water are food-grade and BPA-free, and TOPZEE names 304 stainless steel for the metal in contact with water. The base swivels 360° and has cord storage, and the power cord is 35 inches (about 89 cm) long.

Glass also lets you see the water as it heats, and the level markings on the side make it easy to fill only as much as you need.

Pouring, filtering and cleaning

A mesh filter strains loose tea leaves, and the spout is designed to pour without dripping. Like any kettle, it builds up limescale over time, faster in hard-water areas; TOPZEE suggests descaling with white vinegar or citric acid.

Who it suits

It suits tea drinkers who brew several kinds of tea, people who make coffee by hand at a set temperature, and households that heat water often enough to use the 1.7-litre capacity.

What to check before you buy

  • Counter space: it measures about 8.8 x 5.8 x 10 inches (22 x 15 x 25 cm).
  • Cord length: 35 inches; check the distance to your outlet.
  • Weight when full: 1.7 litres of water adds about 1.7 kg, so a full kettle is noticeably heavy to pour.
  • Temperatures: check that the six presets cover the teas or coffee you make.
  • Upkeep: plan on descaling now and then, more often with hard water.
