The AMZCHEF Burr Coffee Grinder is an electric grinder with 40 mm stainless steel conical burrs, 48 grind settings and a touchscreen timer. It is designed to grind fresh for anything from espresso to cold brew, straight into a portafilter or into a cup. Here is what its features mean at the coffee counter.

Why a burr grinder

Coffee starts losing aroma soon after it's ground, which is why many people grind just before brewing. A burr grinder crushes beans between two hard surfaces set a fixed distance apart, so the grounds come out at a fairly even size. That matters because each brewing method works best with a particular grind: too fine and the coffee tastes bitter or the water stalls, too coarse and it tastes thin or sour.

Conical burrs, like the 40 mm stainless steel pair here, are a common design for home grinders. AMZCHEF says they produce uniform grounds for balanced taste and consistent brewing.

48 settings, from espresso to cold brew

The 48 settings run from fine for espresso, through pour-over and drip, to coarse for French press and cold brew. As a general guide:

  • Espresso: very fine, close to powdered sugar.
  • Pour-over and drip: medium-fine to medium, like sand.
  • French press and cold brew: coarse, like rough sea salt.

Having many steps lets you make small changes when a brew tastes off, which helps most with espresso, where small grind changes make a big difference to the shot.

Touchscreen, cups and timer

An LED touchscreen offers three ways to grind. You can choose a number of cups from 2 to 12, set a grind time of up to 40 seconds in 0.5-second steps, or use manual mode to start and stop the grinder yourself. Timed grinding gives a repeatable dose once you've found the right setting, though the amount produced varies with the beans and the grind size, so weighing the first few doses on a kitchen scale is a good way to calibrate.

Grinding for espresso

For espresso, the grinder fills a portafilter directly. A portafilter holder and pad come with it, and AMZCHEF lists compatibility with 51 mm and 58 mm portafilters, two common sizes on home machines. For other methods, the grounds drop into a stainless steel cup that holds about 100 g.

Static makes coffee grounds cling to plastic and scatter across the counter, especially in dry weather. AMZCHEF uses built-in anti-static technology and the stainless steel cup to reduce cling and spills, and a built-in cleaning brush clears leftover grounds.

The hopper and size

The removable hopper holds up to 10.6 oz (about 300 g) of beans. Its UV-blocking tint helps keep the beans fresh, and a trap door helps prevent beans spilling when you lift the hopper off to refill or clean it. Beans still keep best in an airtight container away from light, so many people load only a few days' worth at a time.

The grinder measures 7.4 x 5.1 x 13.4 inches (about 19 x 13 x 34 cm) and weighs about 5.4 lb, so check that it fits under your wall cabinets.

Who it suits

It suits home coffee drinkers who make espresso on a machine with a 51 mm or 58 mm portafilter, and anyone who switches between espresso, pour-over, drip and French press.

What to check before you buy

  • Your portafilter: confirm its size is 51 mm or 58 mm.
  • Counter space: allow about 13.4 inches of height, plus room to lift the hopper off.
  • Dose: expect to fine-tune grind time with your own beans.
  • Cleaning: check the manual for how to remove and clean the burrs.
