The Purewell 2.25G is a stainless steel countertop gravity water filter. It needs no plumbing and no electricity: you pour tap water into the top chamber, and it filters its way down into the lower one. Here is how that works, what the listed specs mean, and what to check before choosing a gravity system.
How a gravity filter works
The system has two chambers. Tap water goes into the upper one, and gravity pulls it through the filter elements into the lower chamber, where the filtered water is collected and dispensed. Because it needs no power or pressure, Purewell says it works indoors or outdoors, which suits a kitchen counter, a rental, a cabin or a campsite with a water supply.
The brand adds one practical note: do not add tap water to the top chamber while the bottom chamber is full of filtered water, as this can cause leaks.
The three stages
Purewell describes a 3-stage composite filter. The black carbon filter combines a 0.01 micron hollow fibre ultrafiltration membrane, a silver ion membrane and an activated carbon block. According to Purewell, the carbon is designed to reduce chlorine, and the system is designed to intercept rust, sediment, organic matter and heavy metals. Hollow fibre ultrafiltration works by passing water through a very fine membrane, and activated carbon is typically used to improve taste and odour by reducing chlorine.
What 0.01 micron means
A micron is a millionth of a metre, so a pore size of 0.01 micron is very fine. Purewell contrasts it with other filters that have 0.2 micron pores and says its pores catch 99.99% of tiny particles. Pore size alone does not tell you everything about performance, so for specific concerns look for independent test or certification information.
Flow rate and capacity
The tank holds 2.25 gallons (about 8.5 litres). Purewell gives the flow rate as 4 gallons per hour. The two carbon filters together are rated for up to 6,000 gallons, with each element lasting up to 3,000 gallons, and the brand recommends replacing the elements every six months. It also says lifespan varies with water quality.
What it does not do
Purewell states that the system does not lower TDS (total dissolved solids). Filters that remove dissolved minerals, such as reverse osmosis systems, work differently. If a TDS reading matters to you, this is worth knowing.
Body, size and setup
The body is stainless steel with a transparent window, so you can check the water level without opening the lid. The package includes two filters and a stand. It measures 8.8 x 8.8 x 20 inches (about 22 x 22 x 51 cm) and weighs 8.8 lb, so measure your counter and the clearance under any cabinets. Before first use, follow the manual for rinsing and priming the filter elements.
Who it suits
It suits households that want filtered water without installing anything, renters, people who prefer a countertop dispenser, and anyone who wants a backup that works without power. It is slower than a tap-mounted or under-sink system, because you refill it by hand and it filters at a set pace.
What to check before you buy
- Counter space: allow for the 20-inch height and room to lift the lid.
- Daily volume: compare the 2.25-gallon capacity and 4 gallons per hour with how much water you use.
- Your water: check your local water report to see whether the listed reductions match your concerns.
- Filter replacement: note the six-month recommendation and how replacements are sourced.
- TDS: remember that the system does not reduce it.
- Cleaning: wash the chambers regularly following the manual.
