The PHILIPS AWP2980WH3/37 is a countertop reverse osmosis (RO) water dispenser that needs no plumbing. You fill the reservoir, press a button and it dispenses filtered water. It is designed for kitchens, offices, dorms and RVs, where an under-sink system may not be an option.
How reverse osmosis works
Reverse osmosis pushes water through a very fine membrane that lets water through but holds back most dissolved solids. In general, RO systems reduce total dissolved solids (TDS) and a range of dissolved contaminants, and they send the rejected portion to a drain. Philips describes this model as a five-stage system filtering down to 0.0001 micron, and says it reduces TDS, lead, calcium and chromium III. It is certified to NSF/ANSI/CAN 372, which relates to lead-free materials.
Aquaporin Inside technology
The membrane uses Aquaporin Inside technology, based on aquaporin proteins, which Philips calls "nature's own water channels". The brand says the approach has been tested with the NASA and ESA space agencies and that it avoids degradation in the membrane's service life, keeping TDS reduction and flow rate stable. Those are the brand's claims; the listing's certifications are the more concrete point of comparison.
The 3:1 pure-to-drain ratio
Philips lists a 3:1 ratio, meaning roughly three parts of filtered water for each part sent to drain. Traditional RO systems commonly waste more than this, so the ratio is a useful number to check when comparing models. The wastewater goes to a tray or container, so see the manual for how it is handled.
Using it day to day
- Plug and play: no plumbing; just plug it in and fill the 9-cup detachable reservoir.
- One-button dispensing: each press delivers a standard 16.9 oz (500 mL).
- Filter life: Philips says a filter lasts up to 12 months, or 528 gallons (2,000 litres), with an indicator showing when to replace it. QuickTwist replacement is designed to be simple.
- Materials: parts that touch water are BPA-free, per Philips.
- Glass bottle: a reusable 16.9 oz glass bottle with an airtight stainless-steel lid is included.
It measures 13.2 x 5 x 14 inches and weighs 15 lb, so it takes up little counter space.
An important note on water quality
Philips states clearly that the unit should not be used to filter water that is microbiologically unsafe or of unknown quality without adequate disinfection. It's intended for water that is already treated, such as municipal supply.
Who it suits
It suits renters, students, offices and RV owners who want filtered water without plumbing work, and households that would like to cut down on bottled water.
What to check before you buy
- Your water source: confirm your supply is suitable for this kind of unit.
- Counter space: allow for height when refilling the reservoir.
- Filter upkeep: note the replacement schedule and how filters are supplied.
- Drain water: decide where the rejected water will go.
- Capacity: a 9-cup reservoir needs regular refills in a busy household.
- Taste preference: RO water is low in minerals, which some people like and others don't.
