The PHILIPS ADD5930BK is a countertop reverse osmosis (RO) water dispenser. You fill a tank, press a button, and get filtered water, with no plumbing work. It is aimed at small spaces such as flats, dorms, offices and RVs.
Reverse osmosis on the counter
Reverse osmosis pushes water through a very fine membrane that blocks most dissolved substances. PHILIPS says the five-stage system filters down to 0.0001 micron and reduces TDS (total dissolved solids), lead, calcium and chromium III. In general, TDS is a measure of everything dissolved in water, and RO usually brings it down a lot. Because it also reduces minerals such as calcium, the taste of RO water tends to be noticeably clean and light.
Aquaporin Inside technology
The membrane uses Aquaporin Inside, which is based on aquaporins, protein channels that let water molecules through very selectively. PHILIPS says this technology has been tested with space agencies NASA and ESA for astronauts' water. That is the brand's statement about the technology, not a claim that this machine is a space product.
Plug and play
No plumbing is needed. You plug the unit in, fill the removable 9-cup reservoir, and press the button. Each press dispenses a standard 16.9 oz (500 ml) serving. A filter lifetime indicator reminds you when a filter change is due, and PHILIPS says each filter lasts up to 12 months, which it equates to 4,000 standard 16.9 oz bottles. Actual life depends on your water and use.
Size and where it fits
It measures 5 x 13 x 14 inches, slim enough for a narrow bit of counter. Check that there is room above it for the reservoir to be lifted out and refilled.
Certification
The system is listed as NSF/ANSI/CAN 372 certified for lead-free materials. That standard covers lead content in the wetted materials. It doesn't, on its own, cover contaminant reduction, so look for the relevant test documents if specific claims matter to you.
An important caution
PHILIPS says not to filter microbiologically unsafe water, or water of unknown quality, without adequate disinfection. RO isn't a disinfection step. Fill the tank with water that is already safe to drink.
Who it suits
It suits renters, dorm residents and offices that can't install an under-sink system, and households that want filtered drinking water close at hand.
What to check before you buy
- Counter space and height: confirm the 14-inch height clears your cabinets.
- Source water: use water that is already safe to drink, as the brand advises.
- Refilling: a 9-cup reservoir means regular refills in a busy household.
- Power: it needs an outlet nearby.
- Filter replacement: check where to get filters and how often.
- Cleaning: read the manual on cleaning the tank and dispenser.
