The Monoprice 144168 is a motorized pull-down TV wall mount designed for the space above a fireplace mantel. A TV mounted that high can be uncomfortable to watch, so this mount lets you bring it down and out to a better viewing height with a remote, then raise it back against the wall when you are done.
How the pull-down motion works
An electric motor moves the TV down and forward from its high position. Monoprice describes the motor as strong and durable, giving fast positioning, and says the mechanism is quiet and smooth. When not in use, the TV retracts above the mantel, which Monoprice says gives a cleaner look and a better use of living space.
Remote control and memory
The included remote lets you control the TV's position from across the room. It has programmable position memory: you can record a comfortable viewing position and return to it whenever you like, so you do not have to adjust it by hand every time.
Tilt, swivel and levelling
Once the TV is lowered, the articulating design lets you fine-tune the view. Monoprice lists a forward tilt of 3 degrees, a swivel range of plus or minus 25 degrees and a rotation (levelling) range of plus or minus 3 degrees. That helps aim the screen at the seating area and straighten it if the wall or the installation is slightly off.
TV sizes, weight and VESA
The mount is listed for 37 to 80 inch TVs weighing up to 77 lb (about 35 kg). It supports VESA patterns from 200x100 to 600x400. VESA is the standard spacing of the four mounting holes on the back of the TV, in millimetres, so you can match your set by measuring the hole pattern or checking its manual. Weight and pattern both have to fit.
Construction and wall types
The mount is made from cold-rolled steel, which Monoprice describes as strong and heavy-duty, with a lighter build than older mounts. It can be mounted on brick, concrete or wood stud walls. Anchoring depends on the wall type, so use the hardware and instructions in the box, and consider a professional installer if you are unsure.
Above a fireplace: think about heat
A fireplace can produce heat and rising warmth, which can affect electronics. Check both the TV maker's and Monoprice's guidance about installation above a fireplace, and the clearance needed. If you have a working fireplace, ask a qualified installer for advice and follow local codes and the manual.
Who it suits
It suits living rooms where the TV sits high above a mantel, and households that want the screen out of the way when it is off. It is less suited to a TV that is already at eye level.
What to check before you buy
- TV size and weight: make sure yours is within 37 to 80 inches and 77 lb.
- VESA pattern: compare it with the 200x100 to 600x400 range.
- Wall type and studs: confirm the structure behind the mount can take the load.
- Clearance: measure the mantel depth and the space the TV needs when it moves down.
- Power and cables: plan a power outlet and cable routing that allow the motion.
- Installation: this is a heavy item, so have a second person help.
