The Midea WideMax (model MPC6018AASS) is a 6.5-quart electric pressure cooker that also slow cooks, steams, sautés and more. Its main difference from many multi-cookers is a wider cooking surface and a lid that comes off. Here is what its specs mean for everyday cooking.
Twelve functions in one pot
Midea lists pressure cooking, slow cooking, sauce thickening, bean, sauté, yogurt, bake, sous vide, chili, rice, steam and keep warm, and the brand says the cooker replaces nine common appliances. These work through preset programs, so you pick a function and the cooker sets time and pressure or temperature. You can usually adjust the time afterwards.
In general, pressure cooking shortens the cooking time of tough cuts, beans and stews because the sealed pot reaches a temperature higher than boiling. Slow cooking works the opposite way, with low heat over hours. Having both in one pot saves cupboard space.
A wider cooking surface
The pot has a 9.44-inch (24 cm) cooking surface, which Midea says is 19% larger than on a traditional pressure cooker. A wider base helps when sautéing or browning, since the food sits in a thinner layer and you can turn it more easily. It also suits foods that do not stack well, such as fish fillets or a springform cake pan, though check which accessories fit.
The removable lid
Most pressure cookers have a lid fixed to the base. Midea's lid lifts off, so you can stir and add ingredients without holding a hot lid. Once you want to pressure cook, it locks on as normal. Follow the manual for locking, since the cooker will not build pressure unless the lid is seated correctly.
Steam release
The steam release is a button, and Midea says a special cover reduces the noise when steam escapes. Keep hands and face clear of the vent, and follow the manual on natural and quick release.
Capacity
At 6.5 quarts (about 6.2 litres), Midea says it can cook for up to six people, which suits families, batch cooking and meal prep. Pressure cookers should not be filled past the maximum lines in the manual, so the usable volume is smaller than the quoted figure.
Who it suits
It suits households that cook beans, grains, stews or soups often, and people who want one countertop appliance for several jobs. People who mostly cook for one or two may prefer a smaller pot.
What to check before you buy
- Counter and cupboard space: a 6.5-quart cooker is a sizeable appliance, so measure the space and the clearance above for steam.
- Power: check the wattage in the manual and your outlet.
- Accessories: see what's in the box, such as a rack or spoon, and whether you need extra items for baking or steaming.
- Cleaning: confirm which parts, such as the inner pot and sealing ring, can go in a dishwasher.
- Spare parts: sealing rings wear with use, so check that replacements are available.
- Learning curve: read the manual before first use and run the recommended water test if it describes one.
The short version
- A 6.5-quart electric pressure cooker with 12 preset functions.
- 9.44-inch cooking surface, which Midea says is 19% larger than traditional models.
- Removable lid for stirring and a button-operated, quieter steam release.
- Suited to cooking for up to six people, according to Midea.
