The Midea MAD50PS1WS is a large-capacity portable dehumidifier with a built-in pump and Wi-Fi control. It is aimed at damp spaces such as basements, crawlspaces and laundry areas, where moisture in the air can make a room feel clammy. Here is what its specifications mean and what to think about before choosing one.
What "50 pints" and "4,500 sq. ft." mean
Dehumidifier capacity is the amount of water the unit can pull from the air in 24 hours under test conditions. Midea rates this model at up to 50 pints per day and recommends it for spaces up to 4,500 square feet (about 418 square metres). Real-world results depend on how damp the room is, the temperature and how open the space is to other rooms, so treat the figure as a guide.
The humidity target can be set between 35% and 85%. Midea suggests a range of 45% to 55% for everyday living spaces, which is a common comfort range for homes.
Draining without carrying a bucket
The tank holds 1.6 gallons (about 6 litres). On a humid day that can fill quickly, so drainage matters. Midea says the built-in pump switches on when the tank reaches capacity and sends water up and out through the included hose, into a sink drain or out of a window. This is useful in a basement with no floor drain, because gravity-only hoses need a drain lower than the unit.
A pump has its own limits: hose length and lift height are usually specified in the manual, so check how far the water needs to travel.
Smart control and timer
The unit connects to Wi-Fi and works with Midea's MSmartHome app on iOS and Android. Midea also lists voice control through Alexa and Google Assistant. In practice, this means you can change the humidity target or switch the unit on and off from another room or away from home. There is also a built-in timer for scheduling.
Smart features depend on a stable home Wi-Fi signal. Basements often have weak coverage, so it's worth checking your signal where the unit will sit.
Noise, size and moving it around
Midea gives the operating sound as 47 dBA. That is a moderate level, and the real impression depends on the room and the fan speed. The unit is about 11.0 x 15.4 x 24.3 inches (28 x 39 x 62 cm) and weighs 46.6 lb (about 21 kg). Four wheels that rotate 360 degrees and side handles make it easier to roll between rooms, though carrying it up stairs is still a two-hand job.
Who it suits
It suits large or damp areas: finished basements, big open living spaces, workshops and storage rooms. Midea also lists bedrooms, bathrooms, kitchens and offices as places it can be used. A smaller room may be better served by a lower-capacity unit, so match the size to the space.
What to check before you buy
- Room size and dampness: compare the rated capacity with the area you want to treat.
- Drainage route: confirm where the pump hose can run, and how far and how high it must go.
- Power outlet: check the nameplate and manual for the electrical requirements.
- Wi-Fi signal: the smart features need a connection where the unit sits.
- Upkeep: most dehumidifiers need their filter cleaned or replaced from time to time; read the manual.
- Warranty: Midea lists a one-year parts and labour warranty.
