The Midea MAD50P1AWS is a portable 50-pint dehumidifier with a built-in pump, designed for damp basements, crawlspaces and other larger rooms. It combines an Energy Star certification with Wi-Fi control and a washable filter. This page explains what those features mean and what to check for your space.
Capacity and coverage
Midea says the unit removes up to 50 pints of moisture per day and covers spaces up to 4,500 square feet (about 418 square metres). Capacity figures come from standardised test conditions, so a very damp, cool basement may behave differently from the test. Larger, open areas or rooms with a lot of moisture generally call for a higher-capacity unit.
You can set the target humidity from 35% to 85%. Midea suggests keeping a range of 45% to 55% in living spaces.
Three ways to drain
The 1.6-gallon (about 6 litre) tank can be emptied by hand, and the unit stops automatically when it is full and restarts after the tank is replaced. A standard hose (not included) can be attached to the built-in socket for continuous draining. The third option is the built-in pump, which Midea says drains vertically or horizontally into a sink or out of a window.
The pump is helpful where the nearest drain is higher than the dehumidifier. Check the manual for the maximum lift and hose length.
Energy Star certification
The unit is Energy Star certified, and Midea says it uses 19% less energy than traditional dehumidifiers. Energy Star is an efficiency programme in North America, and the figure is the brand's comparison, so your own running time and energy use will depend on how damp the space is.
Smart control
Wi-Fi lets you control the unit through the MSmartHome app on iOS and Android, and Midea also lists voice commands through Alexa and Google Assistant. A built-in timer lets you schedule operation. As with any connected device, you need a good signal where it sits.
Noise, filter and handling
Midea gives the operating sound as 47 dBA, and says it is meant for use while you sleep or relax. Actual noise will vary with fan speed and room acoustics. The filter is washable, so there is no replacement part to buy for routine upkeep. The unit measures about 12.0 x 16.0 x 24.0 inches (30 x 41 x 61 cm) and weighs 43 lb (about 19.5 kg). Four wheels that rotate 360 degrees and handles make it easier to move.
Who it suits
This model suits basements, cellars, crawlspaces, large living areas and storage rooms where moisture is a recurring problem. Midea also lists bedrooms, bathrooms, kitchens and offices. If you only need to treat a small room, a smaller unit may be a better fit.
What to check before you buy
- Space: match the 50-pint capacity to the size and dampness of the room.
- Drain route: decide whether you will empty the tank, use a hose or use the pump, and measure the distance.
- Hose: the hose for continuous draining is not included.
- Power: check the manual for electrical details and outlet needs.
- Wi-Fi: the app features need a connection in the room.
- Upkeep: clean the filter as the manual describes.
