The Midea MAD50C1ZWS is a portable dehumidifier rated to remove up to 50 pints of moisture a day. It's aimed at damp basements and larger rooms, where excess humidity makes the air feel heavy and can lead to musty smells. It also has app and voice control, which sets it apart from simpler models.

What 50 pints and 4,500 sq. ft. mean

Dehumidifier capacity is usually quoted as pints of water removed per day under specified test conditions. Midea rates this unit at 50 pints and recommends it for spaces up to 4,500 square feet (about 418 square metres). Midea adds that, depending on your climate and room size, you may need a larger unit for the best effect. A very damp space typically needs more capacity than a dry space of the same size.

The tank holds 1.6 gallons (about 6 litres). When it fills, the unit stops automatically and restarts once the tank is emptied.

Humidity setting and timer

You can set the target humidity from 35% to 85%. Midea suggests keeping indoor humidity in the 45% to 55% range. A turbo mode is there for maximum moisture removal, and a programmable timer lets you schedule when it runs. Auto restart brings it back on after a power cut, and auto defrost helps it keep working when coils get cold.

Drainage options

You can empty the tank by hand or attach a standard hose (not included) to the built-in socket for continuous draining. A hose is often the practical choice in a basement, where emptying a tank every day gets tedious. Continuous draining needs a floor drain or sump, or a downhill run for the hose, since the unit relies on gravity.

Noise and energy use

Midea gives the quiet-operation figure as 47 dBA and lists sound pressure at 54 in the description. Noise depends on fan speed and the room. The unit is Energy Star certified, and Midea says it uses 19% less energy than traditional dehumidifiers.

Smart control

The dehumidifier works with the MSmartHome app on iOS and Android, and with Alexa and Google Assistant voice commands, over Wi-Fi.

Size and moving it

It measures about 11.5 x 15.9 x 24.3 inches (29 x 40 x 62 cm) and weighs 33.5 lb (about 15 kg). It has handles and four 360° rotatable wheels. The filter is washable, so there are no replacement filters to buy, and Midea includes a one-year parts and labour warranty.

What to check before you buy

  • Room size and dampness: match capacity to the space and how wet it is, not only its square footage.
  • Where it will sit: leave clearance around the air intake and outlet, as the manual describes.
  • Drainage: decide between emptying the tank and running a hose, and buy a hose if needed.
  • Wi-Fi: the smart features need a compatible home network.
  • Noise: check whether 47 dBA suits a bedroom or living area.
  • Upkeep: plan to wash the filter and clean the tank regularly.
