The Midea MAD22C1AWS is a portable dehumidifier that removes up to 22 pints of moisture a day. Midea rates it for spaces up to 1,500 square feet and suggests basements, bathrooms, bedrooms, offices, kitchens, cellars and crawlspaces. It is white, rolls on wheels and has an electronic control panel.
What the 22 pint figure means
The "22 pint" figure is the amount of water the unit can remove from the air in a day under its test conditions. The 1,500 sq. ft. figure is a coverage guide. Midea notes that depending on your climate and room size, you may need a larger unit for best results. In general, damp basements and humid summers ask more of a dehumidifier than a dry living room.
You can set the target humidity from 35% to 85%. The unit runs until the room reaches the level you chose, then cycles off.
Noise and efficiency
Midea gives its operating sound as 47 dBA and compares that to a home refrigerator. It is also Energy Star certified, and Midea says it was recognised as Most Efficient for 2023. Compressor dehumidifiers do produce some fan and compressor sound, so check whether that suits a bedroom.
Draining the water
There are two ways to handle collected water:
- Tank. The 0.8 gallon bucket fills over time. When it is full, the unit stops automatically, and it restarts once you empty and replace the tank.
- Hose. Connect a standard hose (not included) to the built-in socket for continuous draining, which suits a basement with a floor drain.
Features that help day to day
- Auto defrost. Compressor units can ice up when the air is cool, and this function clears frost build-up.
- Auto restart. The unit resumes after a power cut.
- Turbo mode. For maximum moisture removal.
- Programmable timer. Set it to run while you are away.
- Washable filter. Midea says the reusable air filter can be cleaned instead of replaced.
Moving it around
It measures 10.5 x 15.3 x 19.8 inches and weighs 33.5 lb (about 15 kg). It has handles and 360-degree rotatable wheels, so it can be moved between rooms. A remote control is not included; Midea states that the model has none.
Who it suits
It suits households with a damp basement, a humid bedroom, a laundry area or similar space where moisture is an ongoing issue and the area is within the rated size.
What to check before you buy
- Room size and dampness. Compare your space with the 1,500 sq. ft. coverage figure, and consider how damp it is.
- Drainage. Decide between emptying the tank and using a hose, which you would buy separately.
- Noise. Check 47 dBA is acceptable where it will run.
- Weight and stairs. At 33.5 lb it is portable but not light.
- Temperature. Check the operating range in the manual for cool spaces such as garages.
- Upkeep. Plan to clean the filter and tank regularly.
- Warranty. Midea lists one year of parts and labour.
